The Computer/Software/Marketing Help Thread

A load of shit has affected some (a lot of) Amazon AWS infrastructure, lots of sites down ATM

But not the UKSF, no sir.

Proof I think you’ll find, that we are better than Amazon.

ah man.

I started playing geoguesser app on my phone while waiting for my youngest at school. Streak of 113 levels, had no idea there was a leaderboard and still don’t know to what degree that means but I was first place.

Hello all.

Is there a free version of something similar to After Effects anywhere? Wanna make a ramped slow mo, got a rail trick that needs the treatment even if I never use it haha.

Bringing it back. Fish eye ramped slow mo was always much better than 1000x zoom and 1000x slow speed. LOL.

Cant vouch for it (helpful), but AlternativeTo recommends Natron.

Free / open source.

Davinci Resolve might do the job for you there!

It’s legit free and seriously good.

So I already have that. I’ll do a Google / Chat GPT

I need to get a song to use in an edit.

Don’t wanna download a torrent on this computer.

How do I get it? Is youtube ripper going to be good enough?

Help, I haven’t done this for a long time haha

What’s the youtube url? Feel free to dm.

Using the command line tool yt-dlp can list all the formats it’s available from Youtube in. Usually can get pretty good audio using it.

I remember using some website like Youtube2MP3 .com from back in the iPod days.

Thanks man, Nav did it for me hahahaha.

I could do with this information please.

Pretty straightforward if you’re into command line stuff either on Mac or Linux:

  • Install yt-dlp: GitHub - yt-dlp/yt-dlp: A feature-rich command-line audio/video downloader
  • Run it against a youtube video to find all the formats, eg:
    # list all formats:
    yt-dlp -F https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kYbw-Xqvau0

    # If you want audio only, 140 is usually the best and will give you an m4a file
    yt-dlp -f 140 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kYbw-Xqvau0

    # convert the m4a to an mp3 using ffmpeg
    ffmpeg -i youtube-file.m4a -codec:a libmp3lame -qscale:a 2 output.mp3

There’s a windows version, assume the general principle is the same.

Got a request for help with a website I used to manage. Basically the person who it was registered to died and the site reg expired, and no-one else has the hosting / log in info. I’m getting confused info as to which company the domain is registered with. How do I find out and is there a way to get access again? Was considering trying fiverr for someone to help

Cheers to anyone who can help

Edit - found the host with whois search

There’s loads but you get pop ups, be sure to close any pop ups that open

Or dm me and I’ll do it

My current website portfolio (currently wordpress) and 5-6 assorted emails are all with a UK provider, Nublue. Every 2 years, it renews and coming up in the coming months, it’ll be close to €500, which is a huge amount. The domain registration is with a different company.

Anybody have any tips or recommendations on cheaper alternatives?
