Where do people keep photos not on Apple/icloud?
I do like iCloud, I pay 8.99 a month and everyone shares the storage, never had a problem in all these years.
Always used the Google equivalent which costs £24.99 a year for 200GB, also shared with family. Getting a bit full though so might need to look at the next tier.
Could self-host with Immich on a NAS but then you need to support the infra. Google Photos is fine for me. I have a Synology NAS that has all my photos pre 2015-ish on it. So I got a couple places they’re backed up to.
Still using my Google Pixel 4a 5G that I’ve been using since 2024. Love it, works sound and doesn’t need a second charge until I go beddy byes if I’m not really pushing its use (maps, music or browsing shite).
I do hate being tied to Google in some ways, albeit I prefer that alternative to Apple (never got an iPhone and hopefully won’t in the future).
I am wanting to get into building up knowledge in Linux and thankfully by chance, work will allow some time off for me to build up Linux on my pc and phone (which I thought was pretty neat). Mainly bringing that up here as I want to experiment putting Graphene on my old-but-gold Motorola Power Plus, to see if I can kick some life into it. It had some weird software issue with WiFi/Bluetooth or it might be the transmitter part for it in the phone that made it too annoying to use but not sure if I can get around that. If so, that phone should be good even years later.
Dropbox. I use it for work, projects and assorted crap, costs €200 per year for 3Tb of storage. All photos & videos get instantly uploaded to a clould based Camera Uploads folder - a previous provider did this organising them into folders by month, so I’ve kept doing the same.
Still on a Samsung A51 since Nov 2021. Just need to upgrade the SD card as it’s nearly full.

Think I might be going down the Nothing route, been looking at the headphones and watches, they look boss too and not apple stitch up prices

Not too expensive to buy outright either.
I’m tempted to buy one of these to supplement my phone rather than replace it.

I just got the Nothing (a) earbuds as I wanted something cheaper I could use alongside my more expensive Bose over ear.
They’ve just been reduced to £50 down from £70 and I’m really impressed with them. Sound quality is great, they look cool and the battery seems to last a decent amount of time

No more or less of a viable alternative than any other Android phone as far as I can tell. Don’t get me wrong I do like that they look a bit more interesting but it seems skin deep. I was expecting that they would be repairable or sourced better somehow but nope.
Fairphone might be what you’re looking for? I think you can replace most of the component parts of the phone as and when they break. You can also choose which OS it runs
There was someone else doing a modular phone a few years ago, like actual blocks you attached, but it seems to have never made it to production

Learned something new already today. Dealing with some suppliers around an integration, they’re not British and apparently asking if we can give them an unpredictable nonce is perfectly fine and just means “number used once”.
