The Contest Thread

Lol yeah I think that’s what he was shooting for until he put the ‘competes internationally’ bit in.

Just made me chuckle.

But it’s a competition.

Yeah. He’s saying it’s accessible.

You know what I mean…
Even in a competition, there usually is no comping.

Case in point: You know when Grove gets the tits out, everyone steers clear of a flip backlip. You might be trying to get points, but those flip backlip points are his points.

Yeah, i was taking the piss but maybe ‘rules’ go out the window when a medal is on the line.

It’s like in Battle at the Berrics if you go in for a switch double tre bomb on first trick. You just don’t do it.

But if a gold medal was up for grabs would you? You probably should.

Yeah, I think the unwritten rules go out of the window for sure.

Setting a daft trick in BATB is different though, because it’s a direct challenge to the opponent forcing them into doing something whereas setting a trick someone else is trying in Street League or the Olympics doesn’t matter as it doesn’t take anything away from the other skaters points.

Actually, if you think about it - there probably is more ‘comping’ than one realises in a regular contest anyhow. I mean, think of all the contests you’ve been to…how many people 360 flip the hip and nosegrind the driveway flat bar?
If you were to do that, that would have never stopped anyone else. But it isn’t seen as comping.

I guess its a bit different though as it isn’t about the single trick.

Yes. 100 %. Thats literally why you’re there. If you don’t give a shot about medals you shouldn’t be at the Olympics in my opinion

Video piece from Hop King on the UK’s No 1 ranked street skater.

I’m out at “fakie half cab flip”

The ‘Ollie girl’ that came dead last, didn’t seem to care. I liked that the commentators called her out for taking a street place from someone else that would of at least tried tricks, as she was really only there for the park comp and she was kind of embarrassing. She seemed more bothered about smiling and waving at the camera for most of her runs.

I guess it’s also how big your bag of trick is too, if it’s limited to three main scoring ones say, and your other two big tricks aren’t working, you have to go for your third option, even if means someone else is trying it.

Managed about five seconds. He was showing off his medals in that ‘Boarders’ thing too. Must be the only skateboarder ever to have a camera pointed at them and want to talk about that stuff; everybody else I’ve ever seen is all, “Meh, they’re at my mum’s / in a lock up / in the attic”.

I get all that but its not a tinpot council run comp where you win a voucher for the local coffee shop, its the Olympics. The best competitors in the world, whats the point in going through years and years of qualifiers to hold the door open for someone else to get the gold. I say go for it

I wish we had more female posters here to discuss the event.

Curious - for many of you here, how has it been received by your wives/girlfriends? Was it what they expected? Were they surprised?

I’m 100% sure that was his parents place.

My wife’s stoked on it, we watched some of the highlights. Think shes impressed with it and the fact that its gone from me being away for a weekend in Skegness and coming back from comps to watching it on the BBC.
