Taekwondo heartbreak. It’s a cruel sport that.

For the most part I agree. A sport should be in the Olympics if competing there is considered the pinnacle of achievement in that sport, which isn’t the case for many of the money-maker sports like tennis, football, golf and basketball. Dressage isn’t a sport. It may be difficult, but it’s not a sport, in the same way bowls, bowling, darts and snooker are not sports.

And about Andy Burnham’s misguided comments, well I can see where an armchair spectator would get that idea as there’s no getting up at 5am to train for 3 hours before work/uni/school as you would in rowing, running or swimming. His experience of it is Urbis, or street skating around MCR in general, which is easy for somebody who’s not connected to skating to dislike. Other than that bizarre Trojan condoms ad Leticia Bufoni did a short while ago, I don’t think I’ve ever seen any portrayal of a skater in a gym in pop culture before, and even at that, it was just using a popular female athlete in a gym to sell condoms.

Alana Smith - god, don’t know what to think. Eddie the Eagle Edwards or the Jamaican bobsleigh team, even though they came last, still absolutely went for it - especially with ski jumping, there’s no cruising or faffing about. On one hand, yeah, fair play to her for using that position to protest something, on the other, what a fucking waster. Actually, that’s it, they’re a waster. Fucking moron.

There’s loads of sports you could discount in that case. Running, I’d say that setting a WR is the pinnacle rather than Olympic gold, or cycling isn’t winning the TDF more important? I quite like seeing all these different things every four years and then forgetting all about them again.

We are all hoping for this. Could be a great day.

Good points, buuuuuut, in athletics, and let’s look at Usain Bolt as the example, when he destroyed the field, and the world record, in the Bejing games in 2008, that still stands up as arguably one of the all time great sporting performances , even more than when he broke his WR a year later in the world championships in Berlin. World records count in more “measurable” or timed sports, like athletics or track cycling, than in football, tennis or whatever. As you said, it gives smaller sports, like taekwando, badminton, triathlon, etc. their moment in the spotlight and their big shot for glory, which is rad.

I think anything with a gigantic global audience already just doesn’t need the Olympics. If you offered a golfer 5 gold medals in a row or 1 green jacket, there’s only one thing they’re going to choose.

Football. Biggest sport in the world but treated so oddly at the Olympics. Absolutely no one gives a shit. People watching. People playing. Who cares?

Tennis. Meh. People would choose to win 4 other things before a gold.

For the road race cycling, what would people choose? A gold medal or a single TDF stage win (genuine question)?

I guess the skateboard equivalent would be gold medal or SOTY.
or winning BATB12.

Stage win because TDF is the real shit.

I wonder if it’s like this in other activities… Do judo (or whatever) people think the Olympics is a load of shit because their top people aren’t in it, or is it the highlight of the judo calendar?

Well this is the crux of it. I imagine a judo gold is as good as it gets.

I train with a former olympic judoka and can assure you he is fucking stoked on the olympics

The Argentina SA sevens game was absolutely incredible. Best thing I’ve seen so far.

Whether a stage at the tdf is worth more than an olympic title is a tricky one. Obviously the tour is seen as the gold standard and is massive for all involved, but Carapaz said that his gold was the best thing to ever happen to him, and he is an overall grand tour winner (2019 Giro). The olympics is more akin to the classic one day race, and Van Avermaet (winner of Paris-Roubaix), who won in Rio said it totally changed his life and has ridden in gold helmet for the past 4 years! There is massive cachet and recognition for anyone that can say they are an olympic champion.

Excellent. So the road race stays because it actually means something. Glad we cleared that up.

I suppose if sitting on top of a horse sticking his hooves out is a sport then anything can be classed as a sport.
