The Contest Thread

So what about track cycling? I find that really exciting to watch, but I’m guessing the TV spectacle loses a lot without the crowd hype?

I would normally get into nearly every sport that I see on the Olympics (dressage, nope) as I’m always genuinely stoked to see peak performance in whatever discipline it is, but haven’t this time around.

Either way it’s people getting paid to be doing what they’d do for free anyway.

How come?

For me whole thing does have a very weird, sterile feel to it. Even the coverage seems really low key. The other thing is that you can’t even see it all on the BBC now since the rights got sold to the GB News-supporting fuckers at Discovery.

@ciaran & @Cereal_Mews You read the posts above and understood but yet still misgendered Alana. C’mon please.

Weather is too good to be sitting inside watching stuff and I’ve been editing a load of painfully dull business conferences where I have to sift through about 20 x 2-3 hr Zoom conferences to cut it down to 2-3 mins. Less than 1% is interesting, but the kick in the balls is that I must listen to what they’re saying. If I didn’t have to listen to and watch that stuff, I’d watch it as I worked.

I bet you’re glad you asked, ha.

I was having a conversation with my partner last night as she mentioned about mis-gendering in the commentary.

Grammatically is it like, there goes Alana with a fs 50-50. Or use it like, there they go with the fs 50-50.

Also I haven’t seen Alana’s run so can’t comment.

Yep, Graystone will be a kind of Talent Skate Hub in our Pilot Project starting later this year. There’ll be a few others too initially and we’ll see how things develop.

I’ve used either or when commentating. I usually ask the Skater how they want me to call it.

Fair enough. That’s easily overlooked in the greater scheme of things, but it’s not a hill for me to die on.

So either name or a pro-noun as you couldn’t use both unless describing it after.

The Olympics is deffo the pinnacle for track. Just look at the programmes of all national cycling bodies - totally focussed on peaking for that 4 year cycle. Every competing cyclist would love to win the rainbow bands of world champion for their event, but those events are often looked at as spring boards, or dry runs to track progress towards an Olympics.

Ah right, great to know. I recall a quote from Lara Trott at the 2012 games where she said that she liked the pain at the back of her throat from absolutely going all out for a sprint finish in competitions, which I thought was rad.

I wonder if one of the reasons members of the general public would think skateboarding isn’t worthy of the Olympics is because the learning curve is much more visible than in other sports because (skateparks aside) it takes place in their space.

Random member of the public sees someone trying to huck a fs flip down the local 6 stair all afternoon but never sees the guy at the tennis club who keeps returning the ball into the net or the girl working on her bad backstroke technique at the pool

I’ve had similar comments and I think it doesn’t help that a lot of people only saw the best trick contest on the highlights and none of the runs beforehand.

Enlighten me please. If Alana’s pronouns are they/them, surely the gramatically correct choice is “their qualifying event”?

Was so disappointed with the whole street thing tbh. They fell so much. A lot more than other qualifiers. Will crunch the numbers when the dust has settled and try and gather some insight as to why. Obviously something to do with nerves, and a completely different environment from what they’re used to. I hate the format and I think that was an example of it not working at all.

I too hope Park will be a lot better and I think because the stance is forwards 90% of the time and tricks that they continuously do in their lines are similar to what they’ve done throughout each qualifier, we’ll see a lot more completed runs.

See above.

It would have been more interesting to have a varied course, manual pads, ledges etc. It seemed to be largely rail skating. There wasn’t a single manual I don’t think and nothing obvious to manual. Maybe that criticism isn’t valid I don’t know, I guess it’s unfair to change it up too much from street league but the criticism goes for street league too.

i reckon park will be more accessible for the general public for sure, a majority of the nuance/difference in the tricks performed on the street course is probably indiscernible for the general public (and announcers from what i heard), whereas say pedro barros going mach 10 and blasting 10+ft out gives a reference point/something for them to identify with. either that or theyll just sum it up as going back and forth lol
