I totally agree with this.
Squarepusher is the example which always springs to mind.
So, to go all the way back to the original reason I posted - people with high expectations of French Fred in 2020 really is a surprise.

True.
…but you can’t deny Sorry being a stone cold classic.
Not watched Menikmati in a while but I should imagine it has dated compared to the other two FF vids. Aside from Arto.
But that’s my point - we have high expectations because we’re big fans! We just need a reality check.
I’d say all three are classics but Sorry is a classic because of the skaters and how much they pushed things on.
Sorry is a classic for the feels, for sure.
…and the tricks. Some of that shit is still so heavy!
It’s the one with the weird ‘live’ soundtrack! Always a bad sign when skate videos get their own score.
SP is a weird one, I think every release has peaks and troughs, every single one just that his later albums have a different timbre overall which does not appeal to me as much. It’s a combination of his own software he developed and the overuse of the Eventide Orville which he slathers on everything. You would though if you had one.
Feels? you mean nostalgia of the time? You could say the same for the Rythmn vid if that was the only vid you had at the time and rinsed it.
Sorry though, yeah I agree, there is more to it than tricks, the extra personal bits of the skaters being themselves, a quotable vid for a generation. I guess you can put that kudos square at Fred’s feet, he didn’t have to use any of that but chose to.
Nah, I don’t mean nostalgia.
I mean the personal bits, the quotables, etc. the non-technical parts in the edit which got you hyped at the time.
“Arto! Arto! Wake up! Let’s go skate, man.”
Sorry is undeniably an all time classic. It’s nearly 20 years old so of course it’s going to feel different to stuff being produced now. But that doesn’t take away from its standing within the scheme of things.
‘My hass is out’
Also, side note - I forgot that Geoff starts his part with a 20 stair lipslide IN A LINE.
I’d not seen it posted before. Def worth a watch - cheers Anon.
Not to brag but I was at Besos the day they filmed that skit and the Penny shifty kickflip over the bar CMOAC hehe
That’s worth bragging about
Ooooof! How long did it take him?
Not to many trys from what I remember… but it took ages to film in that there was plenty of downtime chilling, smoking etc inbetween goes… We just stayed well out of the way sat on the stairs at the side then left on a hype!
The shifty flip or the skit?!
Seen both penny and arto several times again that week at Macba. Not skating though just sat there for hours on end… Felt a bit sorry for them to be honest as they just got mobbed the entire time hence probably why they weren’t skating.
Shifty flip… wasnt really aware the skit got filmed as cameras were always in hand.
This is the same Element who quickly cut back on the number of a pro’s models, such as Jeremy Wray, never used his footage for their videos and then wonder why his boards don’t sell as much as Bam’s.
They have a couple of video heavyweights there in Fred Mortagne and Jon Miner, but, fuck, i don’t know, it’s not really working out is it? Pretty sure Mortagne was working for Element more in a photographer’s capacity, similar to Brian Gaberman, who also recent left their “ambassador” program.
Includes a guest trick by Julien Stranger.
