Chima obviously stands out for that insane part and the stand out bangers he did in it that also got to print in Thrasher. But I think it’ll be Suciu’s unless there is a last minute jaw dropped from somebody out there….
Jack O’Grady’s Pass~Port part (rail to rail) and Thrasher cover (of said trick) was this year don’t forget.
Edit: Snap at Mick.
That Suicu part was solid. I thought his recent habitat part was totally forgettable.
This is the second year in a row he’s gone wild with parts dropping in November, right?
Reeks of desperation. Not a great look.
Can’t agree. Everybody knows that any skater in contention for SOTY has to put the effort in with video parts, photos, etc. It shouldn’t make a difference. Suciu has had a lot of coverage over the past few years, never mind 2021. Saying that, this year, he could almost win by default, for want of a better phrase - I’m struggling to think of another skater who’s put out an equal numberl of heavy parts this year. Usually it’s a dude who’s done what Mason Silva or Silas Baxter Neal did with 3-4 video parts, a couple of mag covers and a slew of magazine photos.
If not Suciu, I’m still voting for Felipe Nunes.
Not sure that’s fair - it’s been the template for a good few years now that in order to be in the running for SOTY you need to blitz it towards the end of the year. Everyone (mostly) who’s interested in getting SOTY does it and I don’t think there’s anything wrong with wanting it.
Also, no one remembers what came out last month, never mind 10 months ago these days . You could have released the all time greatest part back in Feb, but by Nov no one will remember (in the short term)
Off the top of my head, I can remember from this year (not trying to make a point, I just wondered what I could actually recall):
Silas, Clive Dixon, Austyn’s Former part, the lad who ollied rail to rail, Irish (?) insta lad who skates stationary in his shed, Appleyard, Yuto, the Primitive video, Figgy in Emerica vid, Toy Machine’s video*, did Shane put something out?
*possible late entry from Dashawn in Toys upcoming vid?
Suciu is equally creative, tech and gnarly, you don’t get that very often.
He finds ways to do lines at spots where there’s not that much to skate and makes them look pretty rad (like that line where he stays on those ledges at 2:50ish). Oh and he does a nollie flip crooks and a ledge front board in the same line, when is the last time you saw that?
I don’t mind him dropping his stuff now. If you’re going for SOTY, you can’t really show the world what you’ve been working on in 2021 in say February 2021, can you? And I don’t see what’s wrong with going for SOTY if that’s your thing. I mean, it’s a lot of people’s dream to get that award and no one ever got it without going hard.
The shove-it ride on grind was well good as said @Gconroy, the fakie 5-0 frontside half cab out at the same spot (?) was gnarly too.
I’m often surprised at how big Suciu goes, I’m fairly sure he’d get an equal amount of respect for the tech and creative stuff he does on smaller obstacles. He does seem pretentious and maybe a bit desperate to get this award but as a consumer I’m loving that myself because I get to see all these parts!
We say this every single year but SOTY celebrates a certain type of skater and the majority are gnarlers. Kyle Walker won it for grinding that ridiculous rail.
Look at the long long list of amazing skaters who have never won it. Kalis is one of my all times favorites and would’ve never got a look in
Suciu winning it would be off brand imo. He’s better than that
His foot was in an air cast in the latest Passport clip so I guess he mullered himself.
Verso was two years ago now. So he’s given himself a bit of time to rack up footage.
Suciu is an incredible skater, his parts and style are always banging but this many parts at this time of year certainly does seem SOTY desperate

Suicu could release parts over the year and it would feel so much more respectable.
Haven’t got time to dig into stuff today - but comments that people one because of one rail just won’t be the case.
I bet those people had covers, interviews, contest shit (no, not SLS but KOTR/Bust or Bail, etc) and other parts going on.
I dunno. I’ve always found the Thrasher SOTY decision to be fair and have usually felt like those who disagree largely are thinking that this is “peoples choice SOTY” and not a decision by a mag about those who have done most for the mag that year.
This is so important. It’s a magazine deciding who their favourite skateboarder of that year is. It’s not a competition about who the best skateboarder is. That’s something else.
Which is why I’d be surprised if Mark got it.
Suciu is definitely more of a Transworld skater
Interesting which sponsors got which parts from Suciu. Are we to infer he likes Spitfire the most because they got the best part out of him?! Are Spitfore paying Mark more than Habitat?
Yeah I agree. Although I find the way he puts his footage out a very see through and desperate push for SOTY, I’m not mad at him for it.
If he wants it, there’s nothing wrong with that.
As said by Londonskater and build, the award is about who has gone the hardest for thrasher, not who’s the best skater. in that respect I can’t ever see him getting it.
Jeremy Elkin’s video “Poisonous Products” from a few years ago features a line going from spot to spot. It’s got nothing on Suciu’s line, but that was the first time I realised how close they were!
Just watched a Tampa Am recap and holy shit 90% of them totally stink.
Cariuma and late flips all over the shop.
