Bet you’re watching it now
Yeah, I have to admit to watching it more than once as well. Absolute car crash section, hugely entertaining. Would watch again. Unrepentant.
An absolute classic.
Wish I still had the MiB meme that @sk8arrog8 made regarding that one
Wow forgot about that one
Wasn’t expecting any support on this issue. I often find myself enjoying unloved/controversial video parts and they remain in my memory far longer than a lot of carefully conceived ones. My favourite parts are the ones that manage to take controversial elements and push things just enough to expand the mainstream, not to be total outliers. Sci Fi Akwasi part and Lenz III, stuff like that.
Coldplay is a low blow for sure, I can enjoy an in your face type section as well, if I didn’t it would take out a lot of classics I reckon.
I’ll have to check this Sinner section out then!
Enjoy
What have I let myself in for I wonder.
I really like Spacemen 3 they were one of my teenage favourites, had it written on my army surplus satchel and everything.
I don’t really click with the more recent Spiritualized stuff though, saw them at Green Man this Summer and I got pretty bored. I like it spacey…Shine a Light probably last one I really liked but I am pretty ignorant of most of their newer stuff.
Agreed. Although the track that was used wasn’t great. Also Spaceman3 > Spiritulized imo.
Ishod footage was great. So much control. It all seems effortless.
There are lots of bands like that, especially spacemen 3 that just sound so normal to someone that is discovering now. I never caught that side of things at the time or anytime soon after so I just can’t get into any of it. It’s all fine but just doesn’t push any buttons.
Totally appreciate that they are reverred though. Music has to be appreciated in the context of time.
I’m speaking personally really but imagine that others could feel the same if they listened to things that were inspired and progressed on that kind of idea and sound. I can also totally imagine that some people will still discover them in a fresh way with zero context of time, ifluence and what came after.
We’re all hearing and gravitating to different things with music. It’s all so subjective and why music is literally the best thing every created. For the mind and soul, we all need it.
Can we get a @jimo top ten all time skate video rundown please?
Potentially all shake junt and sk8mafia but I’m hoping I’m gonna get some wildcards that I haven’t thought of in a long time
“Somewhere a 14 year old is smoking his first joint and listening to Pink Floyd”
I would absolutely hope so! Although Pink Floyd is another that I didn’t discover any time.
Trouble is, there are more 14 year old dropping xanax to some tatted faced trap mumbler.
It was never just about the music for me back then. Spacemen 3 looked cool, albums looked cool, they had a sick name. You heard something on Out on Blue 6 on Radio 1 and you’d go to the record shop to find their albums at the weekend. If you thought it would help you look cool and attract girls you’d probably get a t-shirt and once you’ve gone that deep you have to kind of force yourself to like it whether you really do or not.
It’s not like that now, you can literally listen to all the stuff all of the time and there doesn’t seem to be as much social value in knowing a band or being into something. Maybe that’s not true but it feels that way sometimes.
Oh no let’s not go there. Maybe in the pub one day
Post that part I wanna watch it.
exactly, if you’re hearing it for the first time now, you don’t get any of that which was important in building the hype for you at that time. All you have now is the music at face value and today, it’s normal sounding. But still has legitimate value in that. Not all music has to break ground. If people didn’t and we’ren’t allowed to re-tread old boards we’d only get a few itterations of any style of music. But saying that, always exceptions to why things shouldn’t be touched, Greta Van Fleet a case in point.
Yeah bit more cult-y back then.
There’s only one mainstream youth cult now and it’s road man. Literally everyone’s a road man. There’s not even any opposition.
Actually that’s a dumb thing to say…not everyone’s a road man but it definitely seems there is a wave of conformity that has swept the youth. I was looking at some sales stats for retailers and black air force 1s and north face puffers are the UK’s biggest sellers. School uniform I know…but still.
