The Continually Updated Footage Thread

This is a good watch if you like thrash metal. A good bit is when Dave Lombardo says that the first time he heard Metallica’s Black Album he took it off the turntable and threw it down the stairs in disgust :joy:

In fact watch the whole series if you want, it’s great

Looks good that. Just watched a bit, I agree with matey from anthrax, what sets metal apart from heavy rock is the lack of blues origins. I love Sabbath and Motorhead but can’t really get into most metal.

There are good arguments for either side why Metallica are good or bad. I flip flop. Like everything, you have to try and look at everything from the period, Metallica are like Coldplay in hindsight and looking back from now. At their peak they were progressive and still underground. When success and money came then it went downhill as it always does. Coldplay have never been progressive but you could argue that the first 2 albums made an impact somehow. The comparison of how bland they both are can be made Black album onwards for sure. Their money soaked personalities and lack of musical ideas post making money comparisons can also be made.
As for the blues thing, Personally, i’m not looking for Blues based rock, it’s not for me really, Progressive riffs and arrangements did it for me and that period was rich with new ideas that did it for me at that age learning the guitar.
We all get different things from music, I look for technicality, sound design and groove mainly. Others look for more cultural ideas and feel to get moved, all is valid.

I’m not defending them particularly, I partially agree. I just have a history with them and i’m not going to lie and say I’m cooler by saying I liked quirkier music at the time. I was a kid and this music got me at that time.

Master of Puppets is one of the greatest albums of all time and it’s not even their best (imo)

Peak thrash. Great songwriting etc.

Enter Sandman and the Black Album in general were basically the end of thrash as a popular genre. Bob Rock (the producer) did them dirty

Marty Friedman is a freak of nature. The guitar work he put into the early Megadeth albums is legendary

Rust in Peace is such a fantastic album but it’s gotta be And Justice for All as best ever album for me. Even with the weird production - nothing sounds like it and nothing ever will

Berle’s part was way better than I was expecting, but to echo a few thoughts, yep, there’s something a little off about him for some reason. I can’t quite put my finger on it as that part ticks a lot of boxes for me. Maybe it was more about a very obvious image change a while back, going from Chocolate & Lakai to Hockey & Vans and cloning himself off AVE and doing his best to look like a background extra in West Coast Choppers.

Regarding Metallica

and the obligatory Ricky Oyola part…

Berle was letting his pure hunger get the better of him!

Gnarly regardless.

I don’t know what the kids are about these days, looks like a bit of a free for all at the moment - from the biggest pants ever to spray on jeans and a whole plethora of crazy looks in between.

I have a copy of Guitar Hero Metallica in the loft. Played a lot of GH up until I realised I could have likely taught myself to play had I played a real guitar instead and not spend ages pressing buttons on a plastic one

Such a good episode of South Park about this very thing :joy:

Is that the one where Randy comes out with his guitar and shows them that he can really play while they’re playing guitar hero and they call him a loser?

Always thought that about guitar hero!

In tokyo they have guys who play it all day in the arcades and get so good, people crowd round to watch them, and these dudes dress like a skinny Japanese Slash or Thunders, fully posing, fag hanging out the gob, the works. They have groupie types idolising them too.

Funny as fuck

Haha yes! Brilliant episode

Haha, just had to look it up. South Park is so funny, not seen much since maybe series 3. It did help get me listening to music outside of hip hop which is a good thing.

So many good Randy episodes - the Crème Fraiche episode is golden, when he becomes the drunk dad at the kids baseball games and beats up Bat Dad, balls in the wheelbarrow one
