The D.I.Y Thread

I fear those pillar drill things after my friend’s dad got his thumb caught in one and his tendon got pulled out of his hand and wrapped around the drill bit.

 Enough already

You’ll have to show & tell when it’s done. :+1:

I hope there is a done phase. The metal is coming monday. I’ve done 3 trips to screwfix for it so far and I have a bad feeling its warped more than I realised and the metal won’t fit on now.

I don’t have a vice which might be necessary and I can’t be fucked to get one. I’m done with screwfix for a lifetime.

Fingers crossed then!

We need an explainer.

Explainer on the curb spot? It was made with that bonded resin surface on top. It breaks down after a while and gets really gritty so makes slides a pain.

I bought some two part POLYCOTE Cretex and me and a mate fixed the spot in around an hour.

It’s good stuff, you get two buckets, take a handful from each and mix it together then apply with a trowel. You can reseal the buckets and anything left will keep without going off.

Takes about 6 hours to go off but a lot easier to apply over a large area than bondo type stuff.

Nothing to fix with it but I want some

I already have a list of products I also want to try.

They do tarmac in a tub.

STILL NEED

Well there we are. I’ve completley and utterly fucked my thing. Was just trying to connect two bits of wood together.

I didn’t use a pilot hole because the other screws i had went in lovely.

I’ve melted the head of both of these.

Now I can’t get them in or out.

I looked at the screw boxes and the big 150mm screws I used before have ‘no pre drilling necessary’ on it and the 80mm ones i just used do not have that message.

No idea what to do now really. Snookered on all balls.

you can only get away with no pre drilling with an impact driver. A normal drill driver does not have enough torque to power through the wood. While the screws suggest they will they need the right drill to push them through.
Try using a PZ3 bit slower to undo.

Where were you 2 hours ago

This is what i am using:
https://www.amazon.co.uk/Bosch-PSB-750-Hammer-Drill/dp/B003UES78K/ref=cm_cr_arp_mb_bdcrb_top?ie=UTF8

It has a hammer setting so was setting it to that.

Should i drill a little hole using a little wood bit then use the other setting using a screwdriver bit and drill the screw in?

Or should I not use this drill at all?

Fuck i am useless at this.

Mate you’re learning. Like skating everyone has to start at zero and learn their way up. My dad wasn’t a DIY guy so I eventually learned most of my stuff from my father in law. I was completely useless and now I’ve built some pretty nice furniture. Trust me if I can do it then anyone can :joy:

Yeah never use hammer settings for screws , that’s for drilling masonry.

There should be just the drill setting and there’s an adjustable setting at the chuck from 1-20( around that number ) set that to 10 and that should stop the screws being rounded out .
You can adjust the number setting higher if it’s not sending the screw all the way in .

Actually ignore all that , just seen your drill . Looks like you can adjust the setting in that dial on the top .

As for your 2 screwed screws. Big hammer and smashed them in . They should budge .

So i set it to the screw setting, put on the lowest speed, gave the trigger the lowest i could give it and put loads of pressure down it eventually came out!

The screw is still firmly stuck in the thin bit of wood but the major damage has been averted. I can get fresh 2 x 4s I guess.

All I’m trying to make is this and I’m having a meltdown over it

Back to screwfix then for some wood bits.

EEK on the hammer setting ha, but like others said, if you don’t know you don’t know, just learning innit.
Tel you what though, impact drivers are the best invention ever. I started building my studio with normal drills, 2 set up one for pre drill and one for driving and burned them both out. Once impact driver more than halved the time no screws were fucked. Godsend.
Anyway, always predrill with normal drills especially chunks of timber like that. It’ll be fun when you get it done, promise.
