always love your travel pics @Chopper glad you had a good time
Anyone got any recommendations regarding Sicily? Not skating, just looking for a destination for a few warm days with the mrs. Areas to stay / avoid, things to do etc welcome
Don’t piss off fat men in suits.
Stayed in Taormina twice and it was wicked both times
We stayed in a hotel called La Calette near Cefalu, and it was fucking excellent. Beautiful area, with the town about 45mins walk away. Some of the best food and wine I’ve had in my entire life, and jumping off a pontoon into the sea is miles better than walking in off a beach.
+1 for Taormina. Flight direct from Birmingham into Catania.
Me and Mrs G went in May.
The other places I’ve heard good things about are Palermo (where the main airport is) and Cefalu on the North coast.
Add another for Taormina. But it was a long time ago…
Not sure if too late on this, but I adore Palermo. I went last summer and thoroughly enjoyed it. It initially feels a little sketchy, especially around the train station, but it’s largely pretty safe. There’s a lot to do and see - especially food markets, but also for its palaces, churches, botanical gardens, etc. Really good value for money too (Aperol Spritz is €1.50 everywhere, solid dish of pasta for ~€7, coffee €1 - €1.50). Also, good location for doing day trips from - Cefalú, Mondello, etc.
It’s a wonderful city to get lost in, wander around, chill in beautiful crumbling baroque squares late into the night with crowds of young people (as they can actually afford to live there!). It genuinely feels a very vibrant, bustling city. Big fan! Happy to launch into specifics if you need it.
A friend of mine is visiting Bristol next month. She’s pretty open-minded, queer, vegetarian, works for a music festival, doesn’t skate but got pretty involved with a local association which helped getting a skatepark built here. Recommendations of things to see, things to do, places where to have lunch or a drink? Ta!
Just go to Dean Lane and get some cans. There’s a skate pub nearby too, The Dame. I’ve never been though.
This is the most Bristol thing ever. She’ll love it down there!
Tell her to go Turbo Island
The Star and Garter in St. Pauls/Montpellier is prob my favourite
Thanks guys!
If she likes partying I used to party with this crowd in Cardiff/Bristol and at free parties a lot before I decided to knock the drugs on the head.
They run nights in the Queen’s Head pub. It used to be a bit rough and ready and doesn’t look it any more from the outside. The crowd is probably all ancient like me these days I haven’t been to one for ten years plus but thought it was worth mentioning as they run regular nights, very queer friendly vibes, and they’re awesome people.
Is the fire still going there? Greg will know. I know that Turbo Island is for sale.
@franc the dame bar is a really nice fun vibe skate bar. Got a nice loose vibe to it, not far from there on north street in bedminster are lots of good middle class food spots, and probably abit of a fun day out in general. In the mornings (can’t remember which day) there’s abit of a fancy market at the tobacco factory nearby, if you wanted abit of a middle class mums day of looking at posh tat, then getting a nice lunch and ending in a raucous less polished evening I would recommend all 3 in bedminster in reverse order.
I don’t know what non psuedo middle class people do these days because I have a child that doesn’t have a concept of needing a paper round

Thanks for the recommendations all, @Cereal_Mews thank you I might DM you later as I’m pretty keen to head to Palermo
Tons of veggie/vegan spots in Bristol, it’s why I mainly love going there for a skate (cause I’m a foodie/fat bastard).
I’ll add another point to the Deaner being a classic spot to just get some cans from Budget Booze (or Bucky, if you’re that way inclined, they also got the wee bottles of it there) and watch some mad 'eds do some tricks 'n thaaaa, like.
Dame is cool, I believe it’s skater owned. Usually have skate vids on projected ont’ wall. They have Guinness, too.
VX is a mad little spot for food nearby on the main street near Dean Lane, they do these weird-yet-banging mac ‘n’ cheez burritos and it’s all vegan.
Oowee for pricy-yet-banging borgors, near Little Lloyds hip. That’s usually my treat for being a good boy and getting loads of clips on a weekend, that is.
Cafe Kino is a cool spot for brekkie, it’s up the road from Turbo Island.
Thank you very much my friends!
Self quote here, but there’s a fair bit of info about Bedminster / North St (south of the river) which might be of use to your friend. I’ll get some more over later on…
