Total newbie - please help

Hi, i bought my first ever skateboard 3 days ago. (From what i can tell from reviews its not an awful brand - Ridge)

It’s a cruiser style if that makes a difference.

The problem i have is that in the 10 minutes of me getting on it for the first time in my kitchen, the pivot cups died. No problem, Ridge sent me some new ones.
The new ones arrived yesterday and within 20 minutes in the kitchen (this time i successfully balanced with both feet on it and rode back and forth a bit more) the new pivot cups were worn through again.

Something is wrong somewhere and I cant work out what - I’ve looked onlone a lot - but I dont know what I’m looking for and most videos sort of assume you’re doing anyway

My main concern, is that I’m learning so me and my 8yr old can learn together and I dont want her to get disheartened because every few minutes I’m having to change the cups on her skateboard (same brand).

Any help, advice, prods in the right direction etc would be useful.
The local skateparks are full of teenagers who are busy shooting videos and she wont go somewhere there’s a lot of people around in anyway.

Sounds weird. Pivot cups should take forever to wear through.
In 30 plus years of skating, I’ve only ever gone through a couple.

I’ve never heard of Ridge but in looking it up, I think you might need to find something more akin to a Longboard/Cruiser forum. Maybe they’d know as it might be a more common thing in that world?

This place is more about the more traditional street/park skating setups. Or whatever you’d call it.

Or maybe get a ‘proper’ skateboard and come join us? ha ha.

These lot (and others) can sort you out with something solid:

Thank you for responding. Im just feeling a little de-motivated.

I figured with a cruiser style board she might be able to find her balance better with it being her first. I’ll try asking the same on the link you sent.

Thanks again.

Keep at it and yes maybe invest in a proper board (s) . Skateboarding isn’t easy but is a great thing to have in your life if you get a few basics down

And skateparks aren’t the place for total beginners. Try to find a big empty carpark or a normal park with paths

Thanks, she just wants to ride to school on it, theres plenty of nice flat paths for it but her protective gear hasnt arrived yet so we’re currently confined to the kitchen and hallway.

Again, 5 minutes in this time and the cups are worn through. Is it a riding style thing or is there something Ive missed?

I honestly have never heard of Ridge.
And I’ve never heard of pivot cups wearing through more than a few times here and there in decades of skating.

Maybe get your money back and hit up that store I’ve mentioned? People on here can recommend others, too.

What are these pivot cups made of? Can you upload a picture?

I’ve emailed them and explained the issue - if I cang fix the issue I’m just going to have go return both boards to avoid it happening again.

They’re sort of rubbery.

This pic is of ones I put in yesterday and removed after about 10 minutes. The dark areas have holes in them that might not show in the photo. The one on the far right feels like a tougher material and it was the one originally in the trucks - literally shattered after 15 minutes.

Hmm they don’t look good, normally they’re black and very tough plastic

Thats the ones they’ve recommended. I think i need to get some better ones. This pic is from just now of brand new cups i put in at 9pm last night. They have had literally 30 minutes of a child going back and forth in a kitchen (so no tricks)

Sorry will just nip this in the bud for you.

That skateboard is a piece of shit. You won’t get a refund for it.

Where do you live and we will give you a proper skate shop to go to.

Buying a crappy cheap board won’t help.

Brutally honest.
Thanks. I’d bought cheapish (£30) incase she didnt enjoy riding and i figured it’d be ok on the school run etc.

Her board, same brand, came brand new with hard cups. Solid ones so im a bit more optimistic with hers lasting.
Im going to give mine the benefit of all the doubts and see what they say, they might send harder cups and see how it goes. As it was their ebay store I should be able to argue a refund

Oh yer I get buying cheap incase she hates it.

There’s some decent stuff for 50-60.

I just know that when equipment is shit it won’t help her get into it

Get these

I know, theres just so many different options. We went with a cruiser style because she fell in love with a cruiser skateboard in Decathlon and the style suited her.

For what its worth. Shes been on hers about an hour now and no squeaking. So i think i just need harder cups in mine, like hers.
Ive ordered some off ebay that were reccomended below. So I’ll see how that goes

Those ones you just ordered will last years.

Don’t think Iv ever broken a pivot cup, but Iv snapped trucks haha.

A cruiser can be ok to start on. I started on a banana board as they were called then. But they’re very limited

If they last longer than 10 minutes I’ll be happy.
