Oh shit, yeah. Don’t lean on the toes, you’ll get chucked. All the pressure is on the middle/heel of the back foot and you front foot is just pointing down, no weight, just a rigid point. Should be a nice line of sight all the way down you side/leg to your front toe.
I just searched for pics of Donny Barley doing a Smith and found this:
And then I saw this, will you look how high he’s popping out!
Smiths on ledges are wayyyyy harder than on rails, but feel rad when you dip them and pop out, you don’t have any weight on your front foot at all, you just use your toes to point your nose down, as soon as you put actual weight on it they just sandbag and you stop. Need that sweet spot of dipping enough for your board to touch, but not having your kingpin dig in…

@franc i’ve said it before and i’ll say it again. more camera time! we need to do a forum vid where you narrate
Would hate to think what that block does to shins…
Up for it!
This is exactly why I had never tried a frontside Smith on it until today even if I’ve been skating it regularly for years.
Lock that heelside back wheel in and lean back, as soon as you put your weight forward you’re getting chucked.
And make sure the board touches or it’s a 5-0
I would disagree with cuntflambe and say they do lock in, once you find the right place to put your weight you can go for miles and not have to balance it like a nosegrind for example.
I think that depends on the ledge whether you lock in. I mean, yeah it does lock in place but it’s harder to sit on the ledge for ages like other grinds. Ledges with lips like metal angle are easier or curved ledges. rounded ledges are real easy to fall off. Rails you can sit on like feebles but I have never been able to do either on round rails.
Yeah its defo easier with a decent edge on the lip of a ledge as apposed to a rounded one.
Its a good trick to grind up a ledge too as you end up with the board pretty much horizontal to the ground so it doesn’t feel like you are leaning so far back.
I think the main thing is to go fast, a super slow smith just isn’t gonna grind!
And yeah on a round rail once you are locked in, a feeble and a smith are the same and if trying to grind some distance I would just pretend I’m in a feeble as it feels more comfortable.
And remember boys, if the rails not down, you ain’t coming in (to smithgrind club)
man you’re so right, definitely more heelside and lean backwards a tad
Submission…
Wanted to try a nollie Smith grind on the block , see if I could spark up some more controversy but legs were too heavy after the switcheroo session me and mate had
squeezed in a quick skate while it was dry for a bit the other night, wanted to film a mid ledge one with a stinking grab out for a laugh but it rained shortly after : (
So dipped!!
couple of variations
Good work y’all!
Stoked to see some entries, It has rained 22 of the last 23 days though so I think it would be fair to keep this open for a little while longer if anyone was still hoping to get out and do some?!
Might try and learn it this weekend, in me head it feels like these would be easier on a bank to block.
They are yeah because you naturally lean off the ledge rather than getting on top of a normal ledge.
