Do you allow it to know your location?

I suppose I do as I could save my workplace and my flat as spots I’m regularly at.

I saw a robin yesterday. Since getting the merlin app I’ve seen pigeons, ducks, a grey heron and a robin as I was walking back from my parents. Put that in your pipe and smoke it Attenborough.

Me and my son physically saw our first great sportted woodpecker the other day. He was hyped!

I’ve just been in the Swedish wilderness for two weeks and was sad to find that it was barely working there for whatever reason. Don’t know if it was locked to my usual location. Was in the forest trying to show the mother in law and only picked up a gull. ‘It’s usually much better than this’ I cried

My mum and her partner have had to put an electric fence around their pond because a heron or herons were plucking out the carp for a laugh. Weren’t even eating the poor things.

PS. Big fan of this becoming a twitching forum

I see. Thanks for the update. Massively disappointed by this app.
Gonna try to find something that works for me.

I’ve used BirdUp before but it just identifies birds for you so if you want to keep a list then you’ll need to write them down or use another app or something.

Just checked as I was walking past the local aviary and it didn’t work at all for me as well tonight!? Maybe it thought these birds don’t live here so didn’t even bother trying? Haha … or it’s just down for a lot of people at the moment?

This may have been covered already but does anyone use the OS app?

Looks decent for tracking walks but interested in it suggesting path routes as Google Maps doesn’t feature them, or at least the more obscure ones

I use Komoot, as I hate subscriptions and there was a one time payment option. It can be a bit hit and miss in terms of what it shows as a path, though. Seems like sometimes it’s just where someone else decided to walk.

I don’t personally have it but both my uncle and father in law have it (paid subscription) and they’re evangelical about it and I’ve been on plenty of hikes where they’ve used it.

If you like doing lots of walks then it would absolutely be worth it from what I’ve seen. It’s able to follow you by GPS even when you’re in a zero signal area which is all too common in the UK.

Cool thanks - sounds good, hoping it helps with some of the “where does this path go?”questions when out walking in Calder Valley…

I think it’s got a free trial. but definitely from when I’ve been with them it’s got all the OS maps. kind of amazing really. especially with the detail of those maps
