Ukraine and Russia

Oh so you’ve hacked into my twitter feed I see.

Find the switch from the regular posters I follow who normally post on politics and shit who are now suddenly experts on war strategy and Ukraine politics all a bit jarring. Feel like a lot of people are smashing Wikipedia.

I don’t know shit and don’t pretend to.

I studied European history for a fair while but the recent history and politics of Eastern Europe is an absolute labyrinth of insanity. I don’t think most people who suddenly have an opinion on Ukraine could find it on a map but as long their heart is in the right place I don’t particularly care. People SHOULD be talking about this and giving it a shit. I barely Facebook anymore but I’ve already had to remove a fair few “let’s tell Boris we don’t want to be involved” types

There’s a transcript going around reddit of a Ukrainian woman giving Russian soldiers sunflower seeds so that their corpses are pretty when they all die :scream:

I don’t even care if most of this stuff is propaganda anymore it’s fire

I think we’d all like to believe we would act like that in the face of certain death, but realistically most of us would just cry

I saw the video, heartbreaking stuff and fair fucking play to those guys.

Apologies if this has already been posted, but his speech yesterday was incredible.

Anti Vax crowd now watching RT news to get ‘both sides’ of the story.

Fuck them all.

Including @sotonjon.

You think censoring the news is the answer? Ban RT or anything that doesn’t align with your values and everything will be ok? Just don’t watch it. Watch something else.

Again, censoring the news is not the same as banning propaganda from an aggressor like Russia. We had nazi sympathisers in the 1930s too. Strangely they all shut the fuck up when things got real. I wonder how much you’d be “seeing both sides of the situation” if you were talking to someone in person whose son or husband had gone to fight…

See what you should’ve said is: whilst banning RT would be good because we need to reduce every tentacle of the Kremlins influence, banning it would give Moscow the excuse to throw out journalists over there.

But you didn’t.

You think RT might align with your values? The fuck.

Does this align with your values?

As much as you might want me to be a Putin sympathiser, I’m not. Putin is a maniac. However, forumers getting hysterical and calling people Nazis or antivaxxers is hardly a robust way or expressing disagreement.

If it looks like poo and smells like poo you should probably treat it like poo

There’s no media conspiracy. You don’t need to weigh up both sides. Russia is wrong here and you’re being a prick for no reason (other than to rile people up for your bizarre gratification)

Peddling this rhetoric again, like it’s some get out clause…

‘I’m not anti-vaxx but… I’m not a Putin sympathiser but…’ do you honestly know what that sounds like, the old ‘I’m not racist but…’ line that people use to excuse what they are about to say.

Kazakhstan has refused a request from Putin for more troops and support! This is pretty big news. Kazakhstan is basically a puppet state of Russia and gets a LOT of support from it, in a similar vein to Belarus.
Denying this support is a big fuck you to Putin, and its likely to be because they know they’ll be next after the Ukraine.

Sotonjon- if Kazakhstan can take the moral high ground and justify their actions with the promise of some very difficult decades ahead of them, then why cant you?

There’s a difference between reporting what’s happening and pulling a ‘Lord Haw-Haw’. That was what my issue was with the World Service directly broadcasting what is essentially Russian propaganda, and continuing throughout the day to do so. It would have been preferable to simply report the Kremlin’s line on what’s happening whilst putting it in context.
