Ukraine and Russia

I can’t believe we live in a time where we actually have to worry about a nuclear holocaust. It’s always been such an impossible concept, but now here we are, it’s a legitimate worry that almost everyone is thinking about. The 20s really are fucking wild.

Peak ennit

Not sure I agree with that…bay of pigs/Cuban missile crisis in the 60s ran it pretty close, and there were definitely real deep seated fears of a nuclear holocaust in this country as a result through the 70s into the 80s, government issued handbooks and films on what to do in the event of nuclear war to the general public…not that
any the above negates the very scary place we now find ourselves in…but certainly it’s not always been an ‘impossible concept’

Yeah stuff like this was normal reading material for kids in the 80s…

I guess. Before my time (born in 89), but am aware of the cuban missile crisis etc. My dad said it was a scary time but I guess it’s hard to think what it’s actually like until shit actually gets weird.

“Impossible concept to me” is what I should have said.

It’s horrible, I remember it feeling like a very real possibility growing up in the 80s but the threat only ever faded somewhat, it never went away. I have to stop myself feeling despondent now. The whole nuclear standoff only really works to keep the peace when all sides are behaving somewhat rationally and can be counted upon to not want to end up dead either. But by all accounts there’s an isolated fucking mad man with his finger on the button. We can only hope that if it comes to it there are at least some sane heads in the Kremlin.

What gives me hope is that the Russian government seem more power/wealth hungry than extremist/zealots for any other cause. And they’re not idiots, I’m sure they’ll know the implications if the command is given. Dunno if that’s actually true but it’s the impression I have.

I really think Putin’s days are numbered, considering the state of the economy. His cronies must be haemorrhaging money, I’m sure it’s a matter of time before they turn their backs on him.

Actually I’m not sure if I believe it but typing it out makes me feel better…

Yeah, I think/hope that’s true as well. Hopefully someone drops some polonium in his cornflakes soon.

One of my boys platoon failed to return to Barracks on Friday. Turns out he has taken himself off to Ukraine to get involved. The army is going fucking nuts!!

What him or the whole platoon?

I read it as just him on a solo mission.

Hope he doesn’t get captured!

Saw some photos of a Scottish platoon over there this morning, and some guys from US & Mexico.

Just him.

Hard to blame him when our idiot foreign secretary was telling people that they have the full backing of the UK government if they just fancy having a go.

But if they can link him as a serving British Military Service person, that is a big deal. Kind of looks like the U.K are sending soldiers over on the sly. That will really kick things off. If he’s wearing his actual Army Issue gear too, oof.

Oh totally. Just makes me laugh how he thinks or hasn’t thought about the consequences on return. He was meant to be back at work Fri but is currently MIA. My boy has been speaking to him on Snapchat but obviously isn’t grassing him up. This lad will be arrested on return.

Arrested? Why?

Deserting his post. He will lose his job in the army

He’s in the Army, you are signing up to defend the country come what may. Imagine if all soldiers just wondered off when they felt like it. It would be chaos. Lose his job and do time in a military jail no doubt, if he doesn’t get killed over there.

Just felt the first pangs of this impacting my mental health. I’m reading a lot of news on the war as the conclusion of what happens directly impacts Estonia, where I am living with my family.

If Ukraine is taken, one of the Baltic states (eg Estonia) is probably next. This means getting my family out before the shit hits the fan.

So let me run that back. It’s quite possible I may have to leave my home (in a hurry) because of the very real threat of Russia invading. Those that know me will know I have often joked about it but the fact that over the past 2 weeks the probability has just jumped up a notch is just fucking crazy.

Even getting out is tricky, I wouldn’t want to drive, it’s about 1000km iirc. So plane I suppose but might be sketch due to airspace. Or maybe ferry to finland or sweden but that sketches me out too.

I am actually having to make these plans with my wife as a precaution. Can you fucking believe it.
