Oh cool. I thought I was weird.
if i’m totally honest, my favourite Puig is skate-rat cliche Puig.
They’re the classic rock of the industry.
Good point, it doesn’t get called out nearly enough. Now a lot of these guys have gone clean and it’s supposed to be some sort of redemption? What a joke.
How long was the Over It piece in Thrasher? Sixteen pages? Eighteen? That was a pretty big call out.
Reynolds has spoken about it regularly too, for years now.
Yeah he’s talked about it, him and others have gone clean but it’s still a pretty standard thing for the young and new riders to live that lifestyle from what I can see. It’s definitely been covered, just not very much.
I suppose there could be an element of just letting young people make their own mistakes in life.
Young people smoke weed and drink anyway. Just like we did (do). Good luck to them. I don’t think it’s a Baker thing anymore.
It’s one thing to speak about it and another to change things. I hope Kader is getting some guidance - his Instagram stories asking for people to send him money are a bit worrying.
I guess one issue is whether we really want to see that changed? Will skateboarding’s exciting, raw edges be dulled if we start to lecture young people about appropriate behaviour? Does doing that lend itself to even more sportification?
True but not every young person’s vices are used as a marketing tool to sell things, which would for sure normalise things to a certain extent in your head. Also wherever you go skaters will know you as the ‘party guy’/stoner and expect you to be like that and be giving you beers, weed etc. which just perpetuates it further.
Though I reckon with Instagram and skaters being their own marketing team so speak it you can’t demonise the companies too much anymore as they are the ones posting the IG stories etc.
It’s probably a wider issue of wanting social media attention so you end up posting countless pics of a joint in your mouth/ bottle of tequila or whatever. These guy just have 100 times the number of followers of your average teenage meaning they get even more attention/engagement
Had to check both those points were the same person… Yeah, the second one.
People have Instagram accounts before they have sponsors, so they can decide who they want to be themselves nowadays.
Ha yeah first point was more thinking about the pre-IG industry but after I posted I realised things are a little different now.
True people can decide who they want to be themselves through this but as I added in an edit the spotlight that gets put on these kids at a young age with 100k+ people seeing their every post it for sure makes them play into things a little bit more
Every photo (Strobeck must take about 100 shots of him per day at least) of Kader not skating seem to be him smoking just lately. All a bit cringeworthy.
I’m not a fan of Gino’s skating, and don’t understand the whole push thing.
PJ Ladd had the best push.
he just bought anew truck, and got on Nike. He doe’s seem to be smoking a lot of weed, and posting about it a lot. The whole bragging about smoking weed doe nothing for me.
Yeah agree. Smoking weed isn’t cool or edgy*. Especially now that, in america at least, its legal. Not exactly counter culture anymore.
*shut up mom
Mariano in Mouse didn’t look as amazing as Koston on the first watch or two but when you realised that you couldn’t work out what stance he was it took on a whole different slant. No one was doing this stuff, he was unique and he blew minds. Whether you’re into the part aesthetically is another matter though.
I didn’t like Koston in the peak 101/Girl days - he has no style. Not bad style just no style.
His skating has never done anything for me.
He’s good but so’s Lethal Weapon 3.
And to add to that - his best part was on Chomp on This.
Chiefs best part Chomp as well.
