Get a single speed then, it’ll do the job.
What one? I built my own fixed gear before, but it was like over ten years ago so can’t remember anything.
6KU are a solid budget option. You could also try local Buy & Sell, FB ads or whatever for second hand too.
Investigate if you can get something more substantial via the bike to work scheme which should save a fair few quid, whether it’s electric or whatever.
54cm frame is that right?
How tall are you?
5ft 7?
I fucking have no idea what I’m doing and don’t want to go and look like a tit
Medium or 54cm - 55cm frame according to: https://www.evanscycles.com/help/bike-sizing-road
54cm should be spot on for you!
Feel free to DM me if you want to run anything past
Just go to a local Indy bike shop and make a bell out of yourself. I just said I’m clueless and know nothing about bikes and they were helpful with getting the right frame size etc.
I also took my lad and the guys were shitting themselves as he go close to a bike with a £10k tag on it
Bought from them as they were helpful.
Was looking at something like this.
Not bad for £250. Try getting it from your local independent bike shop if you can, same deal as skate shops vs Route One, Amazon, etc.
Exactly. Bear in mind that Decathlon is the first and only stop for a lot of people so they can get away with selling overpriced, heavy bikes to people who maybe don’t know that bike shops exist. It’s full Route One.
I’m with you on the rouge one analogy but to say they sell heavy, overpriced bikes is a bit of a misnomer. You’ll be very hard pushed to find better-specced road bikes at their price points, which is why they are pushing out a lot of bike shops who can’t compete.
100% was just using that as a benchmark.
An old homies bike shop is still going in Oxford so will head down there today
The local bike shop is the best way, often some gems out the back in the workshop you can pick up for cheap
Now you know your frame size, hit up local eBay listings or Facebook Marketplace.
Something just feels so wrong about buying a bike from what’s basically a supermarket that sells skateboards and football boots, from some student working part-time who couldn’t give a fuck what you’re looking for or whether or not you come back. Always felt like a bike shop should be like a doctor or dentist, some place where you know each other and they know what you need, and can help put together the right thing rather than just selling something off the shelf.
I wonder if snooker pro’s say that about kids buying cues from argos
Stephen Hendry won pretty much all his trophies using a warped maple cue. Pretty sure that cue got lost on a flight and it affected him badly.
A lot of the pros get their cues made by John Parris cues in London. Been the way for a long time.
Greenbaize cues in the north east is a great place to buy a cue. Stu who runs it is great and you can test run the cue on one of the two snooker tables in the shop. Feels better to buy a cue from there or a new deck from Ideal than from Skate Hut.
Skateboards Sold by Kates Skates on Decathlon.
Bit like when Slugger sold on Tescos website IIRC
If they’re buying something that’s not going to work properly, and put them off doing the thing, then they probably do. Imagine we all bought our first skateboards from Halfords? Life wouldn’t be the same without the awe-inspiring early visits to skate shops, with the smell of griptape, stickers and fags, and seeing all the other cool stuff that was for sale.
