Black Lives Matter

A statue of Colombus has faced a similar fate in Virginia since this.

Yeah they beheaded it like Jebadiah Springfield.

Which is actually a good solution, statue remains, history is preserved, hard to glorify a person without a head.

Wasn’t there a really bad statue of Cristiano Ronaldo in Madeira? Can they get rid of that next?

Not that it’s got anything to do with BLM. It just looks nothing like him.

The Simpsons can add another mad prediction to the showreel.

Bronze Life Matters?

FFS that’s not Ronaldo, it’s former MCFC and Sunderland striker Niall Quinn.

We need to smash up the Bust on Art Attack, corrupting our young minds! Damn you Buchanan!

Okay maybe not derail this thread any further.

As much as I like LoG, probably the correct call. What do people think?

I don’t understand why in the case of MB, they have to pull all seasons when Noel as the spirit of jazz appears in one episode (edit. Forgot he pops up in s3). I’d also argue he’s not pretending to be a black person, he’s some sort of demon spirit I guess. Albeit one who is a jazz player from New Orleans…

I’m maybe a bit biased as I was and am a huge MB fan, and again, can’t speak for black people, but I never saw it as offensive. But maybe that’s the problem.

Even if it is, just remove the offending episode. It seems a bit virtue signally on Netflix’s part and a bit reactive.

Surely virtue signalling is saying something without taking any action…and this is taking action?

I’m a fan of MB and a huge LoG fan - but Papa Lazarou was clearly intended to be a throwback to less educated times and was meant to just make you reflect on how horrible this was. It sucks that the interpretation (for me) is now changing, but I get it.

However, MB is definitely sketchy.
If you were to say to the man in the street “Picture a jazz player from New Orleans” that mental image is never going to be a white guy.

But yeah, you are right…This is white privilege. the ability to not even see it…

Yeah makes sense. I think my understanding of blsckface had always been that it’s intended to demean or make fun, so in the case of MB it’s not done for those reasons. But regardless of intent, it’s still potentially offensive so maybe that raises a bigger issue - it’s never ok for someone to pretend to be another ethnicity, regardless of the intention behind it.

Maybe there is a problem with that MB episode then. But I still think they should remove the offending episode not the whole series.

Is it right to cancel everything? I don’t know the answer but it seems that all that’s been done so far besides the adidas thing is that every black face comedy clip or racist historical figure has been removed.

I don’t know if removing all of these things help?

Doesn’t he pop up in random episodes as well?

Did you read the Atlantic article?

Na link?

It’s more that we can learn from the mistakes in the past but everything anyone did is being cancelled and erased rather than actions being made for the future.

I would have never known the founder of a group I loved was all those things I despise if the statue wasn’t being removed.

We were taught in the 80’s and 90’s to look up to this guy! Jesus fuck! Makes me fume! Fucking Nazi sympathiser

Yeah one in series 3. But still, 2 episodes out of 12. Its not like the whole series is filled with racial stereotypes unlike say, Little Britain or Come fly with me.

I think though, as much as I am personally a bit annoyed specifically about MB, my main issue with this, as Hugo has pointed out, is that removing things like this doesn’t actually give any context or explanation as to why.

I’d argue instead they should add a warning and explanation at the start of the episode - sort of like Disney did with their old b&w cartoons. That way, people get an explanation about why it’s potentially offensive and can also chose to still watch it
