No, they’ve become “racing slicks”.

Not being funny @nedertron

  • Way less grip
  • Increased possibility of a blowout

No way I would do it

They aren’t fucked fucked. I’ll put it on axle stands tonight and have a look at the damage. I’m just guessing from what I can see and miles done.

Anyone got roof box recommendations?

Fitted my roof bars and the box earlier this evening - coincidence. I use a Hapro Traxer, can’t remember what size but it’ll hold 75kg, opens from both sides and takes about 2 minutes to secure to the roof bars with the claw-type mountings. Thule do similar boxes with similar fittings, but they seemed a little more pricey at the time so I went with the mid-option.

It does the job, not sure what else to say really. How quick the bars and box fit is important to me but might be different for you. u bolts and single side opening was a nope for me.

I’d put a pic up but it looked a bit ‘car wanker’ tbh. Picking up my new caravan tomorrow so might put a pic up as I’ve been looking forward to getting it for a while.

Got a cheap Thule I think it’s large or XL. Opens both sides, does the job fine but only ever had this one so I’m no authority

Yup my mate are you still south @Barf

The best I know personally is New Wave Custom Conversions (who could build you something like this) and they had a two year wait list last time I checked.

I didn’t have the patience for that so I didn’t buy from them I went on eBay and I bought one already done.

Mine was a bit of a quirky conversion, DSG van, not too old. Went to look at it and they guy did it himself and was an engineer and on all the van forums researching everything he added to it. Labour of love for him but his family broke up and he sold it on. It’s been faultless and was a great buy I’ve been really happy with it. Off camping with the family as soon as schools break up. You can definitely find some good deals on eBay and for sale locally if you are prepared to check it out yourself and you know what you want.

Prices have gone up lately, so if you buy one somebody did a few years back the chances are they paid a lot less for the conversion than you would now. I’d be looking on the quality converters sites - a lot of them list their previous conversions for customers looking to move them on.

There’s loads of decent firms out there doing conversions (and some absolutely hopeless ones as well), just check out the ones nearby to where you live. Get on some forums etc and get a feel for it all. Speccing it out yourself is fine, there are firms out there who do totally bespoke conversions and others who tend to offer a couple of different layouts and you can just make smaller changes to various components. Just be warned that if you’re getting something built for you then you’ll need plenty of time to research it all because it’s a right rabbit hole. So many different options. Start off with what you’re going to be using it for and go from there.

I’m looking at doing the same but with ex fleet vehicles like a mini bus as it would have generally been looked after , serviced properly etc more than a commercial/panel van
There’s loads of fleet auctions with sprinters , transits etc and being a mini bus, the windows are already in or easily to blank in .

Yeah they’ve obviously gone to town on that one. Like Mark says work out what you need first and then go from there.

Big vans are good for living in but more conspicuous, less easy to get away with sneaky overnighters, can’t go under 6’6” restrictors for carparks etc…

Might be worth thinking about a lwb van that doesn’t have a high roof? I know I wouldn’t want a taller one but I use mine in town a lot.

Just be warned though that if you do start going on forums that the venn diagram of longboarders and campervan owners is almost just one circle.

Rent one and see how you get on.

This is an excellent idea really. Unless you’ve already been in one and know pretty much what you’re after.
