Did he race alongside McCrae for Subaru

Yes and later with Burns.

What’s a good midlife crisis convertible sports car for someone who will do zero mechanical work themselves? Porsche?

I can’t afford one and have nowhere to keep one but I’d like to get one in next 5 years as a second car.

Way too expensive and difficult to maintain.

I want to drive it with little work required to keep it on the road.

Audi TT R/S Roadster?

They’re ok.

Well over any potential budget but I like the Alfa Romeo 4C.

If you’re not going to be looking for a while, you’d probably be able to pick up an Audi R8 Spyder for a ‘reasonable’ price.

Go Porsche 100%.

Mrs’ Dads one for exactly why you want to buy one.

They seem to be the most appealing for almost every reason, looks, price performance etc.

I know next to nothing about them other than that 911’s are good and the ones called Targa look really nice.

Maybe someone who knows a bit can do a best to worst Porsche list.

That ones a Carrera 4S.

@Mark has owned a few I think? Maybe the best person to ask.

Yeah I’ll wait for one of the petrol heads to give their 2 cents.

I’ll just write Golf GTI Mk V over and over again like I did for 6 months.

When there’s no more nursery costs or child support payments.

Probably still out of reach but who knows what could happen in 5 years.

It’s nice to dream.

My brother has had loads of 911s, he loves them. Bought his first one (a 1990 964 Carrera 4) for around £10k maybe 18-20 years ago and still has it. It’s cost him a fortune over the years but it’s also gone up in value a lot so probably balances out. He’s also had newer ones, turbos and stuff like that. He has a Porsche Taycan as well now which he reckons is more fun than the 911.

I would say if you’re thinking of buying any 911 then you should be prepared for some very big bills and way more hassle than you’d expect finding good specialists to work on it. It’s not a cheap option really.

Edit: The Targa is the one with the removable roof. If you like the looks that’s great, some look better than others. Early targas were unloved for years and way cheaper. There’s more to go wrong with them too, same for convertibles…foggy windows, torn roofs etc…

911 convertible would be good. The hard top standard coupe go for more money as they are more ‘pure’. 2 very small seats in the back. I had a 996, bought it right on the dip for just under 10k, prices have shot up since. Look out for evidence the RMS seal has been done on cars pre 2001 (I think) otherwise you could be looking at complete and sudden catastrophic engine failure at any time.

Great car to drive, but everything costs a fortune to replace. The bolts on my exhaust rusted through and replacements were 200 quid. For some bolts. Mad. Somehow I managed to fit my bike in the back as well, only removing front wheel. Enough space for a board and bag in the front boot, but it’s an awkward shape.

I only know a little about 996s though. Be careful about buying these performance cars, they are usually cheap to buy but expensive to maintain, so people keep them for a bit and sell to dodge any (big) bullets (exactly what I did!).

As always, with any car, if you find one you like, join/research on an active owners’ forum to find out what commonly goes wrong and costs to fix etc.
