Documentary thread

Exactly, the spectrum is not even one single graduating scale either, it’s thousands of scales.
We’re all on it.

Watched this over the weekend, it’s the story of Cannon Films who produced some of the most famous unintentially popular cult classics (Deathwish, Cyborg, Over The Top) and utter Z-movie turds (Masters of the Universe, Superman 4) during the 70s and 80s.

If you’re a fan of Darkplace, you’ll see where its roots lie. Or if you like laughing at really shit films, give it a blast.

Nice one @ciaran Will check that out.

I’m not really into gaming, but I found this little geeky one about secret codes within Mortal Kombat leading to outrage in the US which then resulted in rating standards to be pretty interesting.

Speaking of computer games, there’s been a couple of interesting radio documentaries on 6 Music about the soundtracks in computer games since Pong. The technical limits were insane, never thought it could be that much of a problem for them.

Those were great. Reminded me slightly of some of the brilliant YT vids Wired do:

This is out on nextflix tomorrow for anyone whose interested

Parents killed her and used thier doctor skills to get rid of her and used thier status and pensions to fund a fake 14 year search

Nostalgia for the Light

Don’t even know how to even begin start describing this, one of the most incredible/fascinating/heartbreaking documentaries I’ve ever seen

I recommend everyone check this one if they haven’t already

This was on BBC4 last night:

Might be some of the grimmest viewing I’ve experienced in quite some time. The first 20 minutes left me feeling a little reluctant to complete the viewing, as I felt it was a little linear in its construct by focusing solely on the moderators - exploring their own personal backgrounds and experiences moderating content such as child abuse and political extremism. However, as the documentary progresses, it turns itself into a wider ethical exploration of how tech companies are outsourcing their moderating and policing to companies like this one based in Philippines.

I should say, most of this is extremely disturbing and left me fairly depressed last night, so just be prepared for that if you’re going to commit.

Anybody see 24 Hours in Police Custody this week? Drug dealers in Luton, caught with hundreds of thousands of pounds, and loads of individually wrapped coke ready to go. 20 years for that. The main dude also had 54,000 child porn pictures on his computer. 18 fucking months for that.

Hopefully the programme was playing in whatever prison he’s in, because that’s fucking ridiculous, surely.

Drugs is literally the worst crime to get into.

Fraud is the best crime by a long way. Do fuck all time and make the most money.

I’m still saying it’s child abuse, if it’s a competition for which is ‘worst’.

hahahaha, I mean if you want to commit a crime for financial gain or as a career.

Child abuse and murder probably the ‘worst’ crimes.

Thanks for the clarification there

Top tips!

Thanks for this. Disturbing, yes, reality, absolutely for many.
It’s an amazing country that has been screwed by the Spanish, the Japanese, the Chinese and the US.
Now it is trying to keep up with everything that is going on around it.
Call Duterte a monster but speak to people there and it’s completely 50 /50.
Crazy place but the everyday folk, as usual, are the people who suffer at the hand of politics.
Social media plays a huge part in politics.
I’ve come to learn about it quite a lot and since deleted my accounts.
I feel much more free without it.
It does however, create jobs for people though who otherwise may be in very dire situations.
It is also the go to means of contact for many who work away from home and leave family members, as close as their own offspring, to maintain a means of communication.
This is especially true of Filipinos.
Look up OFW.

so who’s watched Minding the Gap? Lives up to the hype?

Going to see this tonight. Only on for a six night run at my local.

On that note, have you been to the Don McCullin exhibit at Tate Britain? Really can’t recommend it enough for both the early London pics as well as the shots of the north.
