Documentary thread

Watched Dawn Wall last night after reading this thread. Absolutely incredible.

The only documentary I think I’ve ever seen with my wife where she has not fallen asleep. A huge endorsement.

Thanks for the tip off!

Valley Uprising is a good watch too if people are enjoying the climbing stuff. Think it’s on Netflix

Check the BBC Imagine documentary from 2013 on the life and times of Don McCullin. He’s a really compelling guy to listen to. Also check out the BBC doc on Vivien Maier called Who Took Nanny’s Pictures. It pretty much lifted the lid on her story and her prodigious level of work.

Nice one.

The Don McCullin one was actually broadcast last week and I caught the end of it, but I’ll definitely check the Vivien Maier one. Thanks dude!

It’s crazy to see how McCullin has been to some of the gnarliest war zones and seen some horrific shit unfold in front of him and how he comes home and shoots a load of still-life fruit bowls in his conservatory.

Randomly, I caught the 2 of them online over a weekend some years ago and it pretty much blew my mind in terms of photography. The Vivian Maier one is rad, it’s worth checking out Finding Vivian Maier afterwards too - it’s alluded to in the BBC doc.

A couple of you who I’ve got on Insta have already messaged me or picked on up on this but…

I recently made a documentary about John Carpenter’s ‘They Live’ - produced in association with Rough Trade Books.

It pretty much consumed my life throughout March, and there are a couple of flaws I’m aware of (mainly the audio during my pieces to camera), but I’m pretty happy with the end result.

Anyway, put on the damn glasses…

Really enjoyed both Free Solo and The Dawn Wall, and Valley Uprising is on the list. The Barkley Marathons: The Race That Eats Its Young is well worth a watch, very lo fi compared to the climbing ones all about the most mental running race there is. The race itself is really interesting, but the bunch of nutters that are drawn to it make it a brilliant watch.

Icarus.

Stop at Nothing.

Half watched (I dozed off a couple of times) Made to be Broken last night. It’s about Kark Meltzer’s fastest known time attempt on the Appalachian Trail. I’ve recently read North by Scott Jurek (which is about his attempt) so it dovetails quite nicely.

One of my all time favourite films, that little doc was dope!

Definitely check out The Barkley Marathons doc, I think it’s on Netflix now. And the Scott Jurek book is really good too.

edit Just realised that wasn’t aimed at me. But still, ace film.

Eventually got round to watching this last week. Showed the young lad and he was stoked on it too, largely as he goes climbing at the local wall/gym here. Rad story, gnarls all round.
Free Solo next I think.

Dawn Wall was so good. Can’t wait to see Free Solo either.

The fact that you get to a point and there is literally no going back…you can’t climb down or be rescued…gnarlier than any handrail.

Free Solo was ace, also unintentionally funny in places if you’re slightly twisted, not the climb but the guy himself.

And the way he talks about his new gf

Also lol’d at one of the cameramen who just could not deal with the danger the guy put himself in

This was on the telly the other night.

I thought it was great.

I’m a big fan of Diplo, Justine from Elastica and the bassist from Pulp so will try to watch this. Since they wrote MIA’s songs.

They’re all in it, innit.
