Fixed that for you.
Two drags hit me like a locomotive even when I was young!
I think I asked this question a few months back but I can’t find the post or the response, and I haven’t stepped on a board since October so never got round to actually doing it.
I was complaining about my Ace trucks being too responsive, and someone suggested changing the bushings, which I’ve never done for any trucks ever. Anyone know what might be the best thing to get?
I basically want them to be less turny
i moved to Ace recently and found them too turny. I bought the Ace hard bushings and that made them almost not turny enough. So I’ve gone for hard bottom and stock (soft-ish) top - the goldilocks setup
Long story short, buy the Ace hard bushings and find a configuration that works for you
Thanks, I’ll give that a go.
I thought about just going back to thunders but I didn’t use these Aces enough last year to justify their cost, so hopefully this will make them a bit more functional
I think the big thing about Ace is they are designed to be very turny. All that twitchiness you’re experiencing- that’s what they’re meant to be like.
When I bought my first set I was shocked by how unstable they felt and I gave up on them after a week and went back to Indy.
Then, a few months later, I dug them out again and gave them a second go - as stock, with the existing bushings. After a couple of weeks of skating them regularly I came to really like them. The instability improves your balance and the fast, responsive turns feel really good. I always ride loose trucks now.
I’d say give them a decent trial period. If, after that, you decide you can’t get on with them I’d sell them and switch back to a more stable brand, thatcher than trying to make them into the kind of truck they’re not designed to be.
The twitchiness is fine for carving but unless you tighten them down hard it’s too loose for setting up for tricks. Even dropping in is a little sketchy. I don’t like having much kingpin bolt showing so the harder bushings meant I could have it not too tight and still be stable. It’s still loose
I think a lot of it comes down to what works for you. You get some people who put in softer bushings, take their washers off and loosen the top nut until the hanger rattles when you shake it, and other people who put in firmer bushings for a more stable ride. I’m somewhere in the middle- I tend to ride mine as they come, with stock bushings and the nut level with the top of the kingpin
They’re an enjoyable ride, but I’ve always been a medium-tight trucks person, and have always found popping on loose trucks difficult. And tightening them down with the stock bushings felt like I was balancing on the kingpin, which felt odd.
As you say, the more I skated them last year the more I got used to them and could learn to like them, but I skate so infrequently that I’m barely holding on to the few tricks I have left, and these feel a bit like an additional hinderance.
I didn’t hate them, might just try Naz’s bushing tip to see if it helps,
What kind of wheel shape do you skate?
I know there’s more than these but narrowing it down to this should give us an idea of how popular a shape or another is.
- Classic
- Conical
- Lock-In
Feel free to let me know if I should add radials or whatever.
You need
- I have no idea
Lock ins are squarish profile right?
What’s diff between conical and classics?
This sounds like Deluxe language. Or is it bones?
i believe conical has a wider contact patch. classic -
conical -
and lock-in are the weird plastic insert things i think
Can I vote for both?
Lock-ins are flat one side radius edge the other side. You can also get tablets that are flat both sides.
Lock-ins are the least popular style because they are not reversible.
The flat side is supposed to help you lock into grinds. A bigger radius edge is supposed to make rolling into and out of grinds easier. It does make a difference but just going for the middle option gives you the best of both worlds and makes the others a bit redundant.
Pressed ‘lock in’ before I read Jimo’s explanation. Please deduct that vote.
52mm F4 Classics forever
I have some lock-in’s in a box somewhere yet to be ridden. They came from the shop pretty much piss yellow already.
Must be 99s though
That might all change though when i set up the Reynolds 93 Classics. Would never have paid full price but found a set on Vinted for £22! Rode once but looks like the person rode them on a carpet as there’s not a mark on them. Bargain!
