Thanks both. I’ve got a couple of decks I want to clean up as best as possible - one’s been sat in a garage for 20 years so the wood is pretty ropey but hoping I can do something with it.
Hi guys after a little advice.
I’m looking to improve my ollies
I know I will be told to practice practice practice and I will be doing
But I’m looking for a new deck, I skate an heroin egg which I love for skating curbs but it big and heavy and my Ollies aren’t great on it
So I’m looking for a deck about 8.5 no less as I’ve tried peoples less than 8.5 and hate them to narrow
Which things will help apart from practice, what should I look for in the deck?
Long or short tail?
Short wheelbase?
Long of short nose?
I’ve looked at stuff online etc and just seem to be getting lost, probably over thinking stuff
But just want a deck that will help along with the practice
Cheers guys
Ollies are going to be bad on an egg. I had a go on one on Friday and took me 4 goes to kickflip it. I love kickflips and should be able to do it on any board first go, ha.
I’d personally just go with something as middle of the road as possible, nothing out there.
Standard middle of the road trucks like Thunder, an 8.2-3 width with very standard base, nose tails and 54-55mm wheels. Really thin rubber risers/shockpads.
You don’t want the deck too low as you’ll hit the tail on the floor too quick and you’ll keep jumping off the board and have a disconnect. Too high and you’ll be having to put a lot of effort to snap and lift but it’ll be good for getting bigger ollies but will be work. Standard you’ll get a decent ollie with minimal effort.
Sometimes you have to give things a proper try. Bigger boards like your egg are more stable. But smaller boards are easier to ollie. The ‘average’ board nowadays aims at a balance between the two. From what I ride, and from what I see other people riding, the most common size today seems to be around 8.25”
Bricks FTW. I remember 6 being the goal when I was a kid haha.
For what it’s worth NHS came through with a new pair of trucks which arrived this morning from the US. Very pleased. Obviously not pleased with the axle slip, but great customer service and a new pair of ti’s ready to go. Indy for life, show us ur cross tats etc etc
Feels likely it’ll be my last pair of trucks unless I go wider, but I’m happy on 8.125 so whatever
My daughter skates an 8 and some of her friends skate 8.25 and 8.5
I tried most and definitely don’t like anything less than 8.5
I’m a 51 year old just back into skating after 30+ yrs away, definitely need wider for stability.
8.5 is really pushing it for me if I’m honest but willing to try for a lighter deck.
