Completely agree with this I was skating an 8 with a 14 inch wheelbase and 50 mm lil smokies on Ace 22 trucks. Managed a 360 flip first go somehow after not trying one for ages.
the wheelbase thing is very new to me. I’m also relatively tall (188cm) and doing ollies on wb shorter than 14.25 feels a bit cramped. need to find something with short wb but long nose and tail.
could you theoretically counter the difficulty of 360 flipping on a longer wb by bringing the front foot back lower down the deck. I guess that’s why some people do it. some are so far back though it looks a bit stinky
You’ll massively increase the sensitivity, if you like, of the snap of the rotational pop by using skinny, light trucks. I got thunder lights the size below what would’ve made the board exactly square with trucks. That with thinnest wheels I could find (FSWC OG slims or something, 51mm) makes it flick so quick
I still got the slim wheels kicking around if you want them you’re welcome, just have to wait until I’m back in UK till I can post them
I could theoretically and I sort of adjust my foot placement depending on what board I am but I don’t want to do those with my front foot really far back, they just look wrong.
Those are well trendy but they look like they were designed to make skating harder to me (and I think they look horrible, but that’s really personal).
@Lazy if you want the easiest wheel for a tre it’s minimal contact patch you’re after, so they can still be tall, like 55mm but getting the rotational flip is easier the slimmer the wheel is. Those FSWC were 15mm which is crazy slim. Conical full are double that I think. It’s mad the difference when you try it
Yes I wouldn’t recommend conical full for flip tricks. Their selling-point is the wide contact patch, which gives you better grip and less chance of sliding out at speed on skateparks and smooth bowls. They’re not tippy from side to side, which can be good if that’s what you’re looking for but a handicap if you want to flip.
This is something I have just realised after many years of wanting the widest wheels going. You can get the big wheels flipping but it’s just not as fun
For flips I always go for deck with very little or no flat between the truckblits and the kick. mellow to medium nose/tail steepness, fairly flat concave. A slight rocker is meant to be better but I never liked the look. 8inch for 360flips and 8-8.25 for kickflips as basics. Nothing too square but not pointy either. I kinda preferred a deck that is smaller at the back than the front, nise/tail and widthwise.
Truck width is important. when you look down you shouldn’t see the wheels, if anything the truck bolts. Fairly loose trucks. Rubber riser/shockpads!!! Thin wheels, 51-54.
Flips have always been my favourite type of trick but it’s harder to throw myself into them and get a decent leap.
Is the consensus these days that Spitfire Classics are the go to wheel? I’m looking at Powell Dragons at the moment but wondering if I’m going too soft again having already got a set of Spitfire 80HD chargers when I came back to skating. I think my last wheels in the 90’s were 95A slimeballs or something
