Film Thread

I think it’s meant to be a stylised/modernised take on the revolutionary speak of 1960s radicals (think that of hippies, Black Power etc.) which the Pynchon novel which the film’s based on incorporates.

Stick with it for the car chase!

I get that I guess, just felt really clichéd to me

I’m watching the rest now, can’t say it’s really winning me over yet. But I do like a good car chase so…

Thought it was so fucking shit

Ha. Didn’t think it was that bad, but yeah, definitely overhyped.

I finally saw Bone Temple last night, which I really enjoyed. Definitely the best since the original for me. I don’t say this often about films but I wished it had been longer, I wanted more time with Raph Fienne’s character - I thought they did some really interesting stuff with the lore. Also it’s brutal af.

Not much zombie stuff in this one though, which worked for the story, but I do hope the next one is slightly more zombie orientated.

Well I did enjoy the second half of One Battle more. Though I feel like it’s a just a fun action film dressed up as something more meaningful

I read somewhere that they had 2.5 hrs for Bone Temple filmed and it got chopped to 1hr 50. Maybe this is part of the worry that attention spans can’t handle longer scenes etc. A real shame as I could have sat through six hours of that film. The stuff with Samson was so good.

Mixed bag of film viewing lately.
Been going to the cinema most Mondays as its a short walk and costs a fiver…

Predator: Badlands - an new angle, I guess…being that it’s rated a 12. It felt like a Jurassic Park film. Was passable but didn’t scratch the itch I wished it could.

The Running Man - had high hopes for this. Final act is so fucking rushed. Yes, it’s closer to the book - which I’ve read - but no, it’s nowhere near as good as the book. I exited the cinema thinking it was okay but as time has passed, I feel like it’s probably just shit.

Marty Supreme - fucking excellent. Zero expectations and for a film about ping pong, the tone and edit work so well being that you exit feeling like you were posiibly the ping pong ball.
A battering of the senses and very good with it.

One Battle After Another - another bit of gold. Sorry…I loved it. Revolutionaries losing their ways and Benecia Del Toro owning another role all mixed in with parenting tips. Yay.

The Bone Temple - tonally so different to 28 Years Later. I enjoyed 28 years but Bone Temple is amazing. When is the 4th film in a series this good? I’ve seen 28 Days so, so many times…and it does hold a bit of a special place…but the is probably the better film (Although I’d like to reserve jusgement until I view a second time).
Fiennes is next level. And Samson. The Jimmys are brutal. Looking forward to the next installment very much.

Anyone thinking of watching A House of Dynamite, I can save you some time - just turn it off after 45 minutes.

The first act was great, a solid set up, a great cast, and then they just… didn’t write the actual rest of the film.

The most interesting part of all of that was what happens with Jared Harris’s character. You hear it but don’t really register it in one part then see it in the final part.

Other than that it had the same effect you get from a kids book where the last page is a mirror and it say “but what about you?”

It just turned into a made-for-TV film. Idris Elba made for a very unbelievable president.

Yeah, I saw a trailer for one on Amazon Prime yesterday where he plays the UK Prime Minister, shown here with the US president. Looks a lot more believable than House Of Dynamite tbh:

Oh amazing. This totally passed me by but seems like it’s gaining traction. I think the name is what put me off initially. Assumed it was some DC or marvel wank and they’d somehow snagged chalomet. Will go check it out this week

Yep! Same here. I got taken to the cinema and just went with it.
See it at the cinema, if you can.

I saw it without really investing too much into the marketing hype before the release.

I’m so glad that I saw it at the first screening of the day a few Sundays ago, set me up nicely for the day. Really enjoyed the pace, art direction and soundtrack.

I saw it for the third time on the weekend. So fucking good, agree with everything that you said!

I noticed several details that I missed the first two times.

Watched Send Help, wasn’t expecting much. It had a few genuinely good and funny moments but is still a very middle of the road film that tries to twist the romance trope of these sort of films. Good for a date night, Valentine’s Day movie I guess.
