I’ve not seen the theatrical cut. I don’t think I’ve actually really seen any of the current DC super-verse films.
Is the Snyder cut worth avoiding as a first step? I grabbed it earlier…
It’s better than the theatrical cut, I’ll give it that, as the theatrical cut was all over the shop. At least this cut fleshes out some of the backstories.
Personally I don’t think any of the current DC stuff was much good (Shazam was fun and I think Affleck made a decent Batman), but you could watch this on its own without missing too much
Agreed. Got told it was like Dead Man’s Shoes. Is it fuck. Looked like a college project.
Start of the Helas vid reminded me of this B movie classic:
Ack! Ack! Ack!
Best thing Tom Jones was ever involved in. I guess it’s a pretty post-modern/self-aware B movie, like it’s consciously trying to present itself as a cheesy + schlocky 50s sci fi. Good fun tho!
Absolutely. Would probably be remembered better if it wasn’t for Starship Troopers doing the same job in a far better way. Mars Attacks is pretty good, tho…
One of the best movies ever made.
The thing that annoys me about Starship Troopers is that it wasn’t written to be satire. The book is a really heavy political study, really right wing, which makes it interesting even if not agreeable. It’s one of my favourites despite Heinlein having some really unpleasant views. Was a bit disappointed that the film turned out to be a satirical comedy (I only watched it for the first time quite recently).
It’s still really good though. But that’s why I prefer Mars Attacks.
I guess I always struggle with movies made from books, I always read the book first as I don’t want it ruined by the film. But then the film gets ruined by the book.
Edit - did some googling and some people say that the film is satire of the propaganda in the book. I never thought of it that way. That’s pretty cool if true
at “Ack! Ack! Ack!”
Have you seen “Under the Skin” by Jonathan Glazer? Adaptation of Michel Faber’s sci-fi novel that imho greatly surpasses the book (though it does so by making massive artistic cuts + changes).
I’m 100% of this view.
It’s directed by Paul Verhoeven which instantly confirms that, for me.
I haven’t but now I want to, cheers!
One of my favs of modern times.
The atmosphere in some of the landscape shots are so immersive.
Yeah I think I need to watch it again. It looks like I completely missed the point.
I did this, pretty much.
Watched it with a friend who did - and still does - take it at face value.
He loved it for those reasons whereas I thought it was a bit ‘meh’.
Then I saw who directed it. Rewatched it a few years later remembering this and loved it as a satire.
It’s just golden…
Haha yeah the thing is I didn’t even take it at face value. I knew it was satire, I just assumed it was satirising America or propaganda or the military industrial complex or whatever. Still found it meh.
I’ll watch it again as a critique of the book, that’ll be a fun evening activity. Stoked this gives me a reason to read it again first.
Just done the Snyder cut in one sitting.
Fuck it I liked it.
Superman in black outfit was cool.
Not in a hurry to watch again mind.
Good film.
It was her haircut that was weirdest.
