Didn’t actually know that! Ta, edited.

Palm Springs and The Mitchell’s Vs The Machines.

Both lovely feel good films. Palm Springs is a pretty new take on the well worn groundhog day recurring day situation and The Mitchell’s is just an awesome family film. Had me actually properly laughing a fair few times.

Highly recommend if you want something light but still really good.

Watched Nomadland the other evening, brilliant film.

Love and Monsters was pretty good

Was watching it with my daughter and when the dad was watching the old films of the two of them it absolutely killed me.

Watched North Hollywood last night… more a little review than spoilers.

Some of the skater cameos were great. With some having bigger roles than I expecting. The skating is actually really good for a mainstream film (even if the opening bit of skating looks like a poor man’s Pretty Sweet intro rip off).
Over all, it’s not the worst film … but … I found the lack of character development underwhelming. The main character is hard to find likeable a lot of the time. Even getting called out for his actions in the film, which I thought was an odd or bold choice?
For someone whose main goal is getting sponsored, I also thought Thrashin’ did a better job of explaining someone chasing the dream. It did seem to repeat it’s self a bit at times. The romance side plot line is pointless, with Vince Vaughn shoehorned in to play the ‘I just don’t understand kids and the modern world, in my day!’ type Dad. Like I said it’s not the worst skater film by a long shot, even one of the better ones still with interesting style/soundtrack choices.

Great recommendation! It’s produced by Phil Lord and Christoper Miller who also directed Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs and Lego Movie 1, along with producing Spiderverse, to which there’s a lot of visual similarities.

Stroszek is on the BFI channel at the moment. If you want to descend into a spiral of existential dread I can highly recommend it. Bruno S is amazing. I think I need to rewatch The Enigma of Kaspar Hauser as a palette cleanser.

The maternity ward, busking, the supermarket turkey, the chicken and the auction scenes are all ballistic. Directors’ commentary is ace too if you can get a hold of it.

Reign of Fire is on tv now, I remember this being great but it was ages ago since I watched it.

Thought it might be interesting for my son to watch Crocodile Dundee the other night. I recall it being a huge film at the time, it pretty transcended the cinema and became a proper 80s cultural phenomenon. Hasn’t aged well.

Watched this the other day, agree with your review. Loads of skaters and skating in it. Found it pretty cringe mainly and fairly bland in the end. None of the characters are likeable really

I watched it last night.

The soundtrack was really, really good.

For a first film, written and directed by the owner of Illegal Civ…its a really solid effort.

I do agree with the above in that the issue is with the main character.
He isn’t likeable because of his mistakes whereas he really needed to be likeable despite his mistakes.
Vince Vaughan was good but again, the angle of his character didn’t really become apparent as it did in the final scene. That all needed to be portrayed throughout.
The girlfriend stuff made sense but definitely was a bit of a sideline whereas I think if she was less understanding of him needing to skate, it would have been better. Almost should have been a pre-existing relationship which was falling apart…

The dialogue in the first act is pretty clunky, too. I almost feel like the whole thing was shot chronologically as everyone got better as the film went by.

Nico was very good. Clearly a talented actor.

I think the only ‘cringe’ is just watching as a UK audience because of the UK/Euro take on skateboarding in that it is just a ‘thing’ whereas in certain cities in the US (SD, LA and to a certain extent SF) aiming to be a pro-skater as a job choice and being vocal about that isn’t too uncommon unlike here were even the slightest hint of that will get you laughed off stage.

The trailer was good!

Where can I watch it?

No idea. I just went the torrent/Usenet route…grabbed it a few weeks ago and never got round to it till last night.

Was easy to find, though.

Yeah it was far from a disaster and I liked the subtle 50s throwback vibes but story and script pretty blah. The girlfriend didn’t exactly get much of a role apart from ‘the babe’

Just seen 3.10 to Yuma. That was ace. Never heard anything about it before. Came on BBC so if you’re into modern produced old Westerns then check it out on iPlayer
