Gone Skateboarding?

New shoes had a roll around legs still dead from the weekend, but nice to be out socialising

Had a decent time. Did my first ever frontside pop shuv on a flat bank, that I can remember anyway. They’ve eluded me for a week or so. Sketchy of course, but I’m taking it…

Been out for a lunchtime half hour roll. Widdled about on a mellow hip but stunk myself out seeing my own shadow.

Out again for another quick blast. Did a few bits that made me happy. Including the most stinking switch 360 on a mellow bank. Lucky i was the only one there otherwise everyone in eyeshot would have instatantly vomited.

Went out first thing this morning and headed up to Exeter. Got there for 8 am and tried hurricanes. Was lovely having the park totally empty of kids

Also bumped into a friend in town who said a scene is virtually non existent there now, real shame.

Is there a skate shop there now?

Sort of,

The boarding house changed hands and Tim retired, the guy he sold it to ran it in to the ground within a few years, not helped by Covid and turned lots of the locals against him, and refused to let anyone else take the shop on.

There is a two seasons, which was being rebranded as a Tiki Surf when I went in yesterday and will no longer be selling boards but staffed and run by local skaters

There is also a Sessions which is a predominantly surf shop but carries skate stuff which took over Saltcity when the owner passed, which is 3 doors up from the original boarding house.

Flatspot have also attempted to open a few shops over the years, and there is currently an Always in Colour but don’t think it carries any skate stuff.

I remember the first one they opened just around the corner from the boarding house. I felt like a traitor to Tim going in there even though at the time I was almost predominantly skating in Plymouth and friends with Flatspots owner.

Yeah the Exeter scene is a bit of an odd one. Neither remaining shops has really built a scene around them and any premieres are all last minute and badly advertised so only a couple of people turn up.

There’s a bit of hope though with a small younger crew (early 20s) that are starting to come together at Flowerpot and are exploring the city on street missions. Looks like they are starting to film things and finding new spots.

There’s also an older crew I roll with (generally 40+) and a few people are out most days somewhere. Mostly skateparks at quiet times but starting to do more street.

We must have quite a few mutual friends, have we ever met?

On a different note, this park is halfway between Plymouth and Exeter and has been here about 12 years, finally been to skate it today, totally empty and worth the trip

We probably have at somepoint. I’m from around Plymouth way originally but now up in Exeter.

That park is so much fun! I’ve been a fair bit and it’s always empty. That whippy quarter is great!

Like ships in a night, I grew up in Exeter but moved to Plymouth in 2016.

Hahaha totally! That’s around the same time I moved as well!

A tiny village called ilsington, the block was caked so evidence of recent use.

Only slight gripe is the rail is a little close to the block so makes the angle for skating the right hand side a little tight but would sooner take that over a busy park.

Additionally anyone heading to Devon/Cornwall this year may wish to add the new Launceston park to their itinerary.

A friend was there today, made by the same people as Finsbury Park.

Had an hour and a half tonight but wasn’t feeling it - a few issues at home with the kids (meltdowns etc) so wasn’t in the right frame of mind, my sciatic nerve is being a prick and I felt myself losing my temper a little. Stayed behind after closing chatting to my mate, got some advice on my front foot position for backside flips and as soon as I’d moved my foot forward by about 1.5", I’d got on top of a couple. Not full rotation but flipping right, staying under me and landing. A positive finish to a rough session.

I’ll head down to Stoke Plaza early tomorrow, probably with my son for an hour or so. See if I can make inroads into a line I want to do there for the 48/48.

Filmed this the other day,

First one I’ve done in 7/8 years. You can probably see the genuine surprise in the landing.
