Great episode from This American Life this week. Some of this is absolutely crushing.
Just listening now. Unfortunately for me, the EMS worker at start sounds like John C Reilly and I keep visualising him as Wreck-it Ralph.

worth seeing again though
Heard on the news that isolation is working, the virus seems to be slowing at the moment. The peak of it might just be weeks away. The NHS want 30,000 ventilators for the peak and we have a third of that right now but theyâre working hard on it. Iâm sure theyâll be more twists and turns though.
Cue everybody going âWeâve beaten it!â and running outside.
I know right. âIsolations working, lets go out!â
If by some chance the social distancing thing works then you just know that all the people ignoring it and saying that the virus is nothing to worry about will say that they were right all along. Just like all those people who said that Y2K was a load of fuss over nothing because everything important kept working. âBecause we fixed it you utter fucking bellendâ.
Theyâd have to have their heads up their arses to think that. look at the shut down in place, work, schools, shops, pubs, swimming pools, gyms, seeing family, McDonalds, ect. Towns and cities are deserted.
Yeah mate, you had a few ciders with your mates down the park, that showed them!
Wouldnât it be really quite alarming if it wasnât slowing a bit given how much less contact people have with each other now?
I guess they didnât know how many people were infected, this was a good way to see, itâs only been over a week for some people (kids were still in school a week Friday just gone. Pubs, work, ect shut down that Friday too). Iâm on day 11. Could it still pass with people exercising, doing shopping still, ect? These are uncharted waters.
Fuck is it only day 11?
Man I love that you posted this. Iâve argued with so many people and their bullshit about things like that. ây2k was an overreactionâ itâs the same people saying that brexit wonât be that bad, in which case itâll be because of hard work to make it less shit. Same goes for y2k, same goes for corona
Cant remember where I read it but it was a really long article about the whole 72K bug thing, basically saying that 20 years out, it all seems like a bit of a joke. But actually, if it wasnât for the huge amounts of work being down in the background by IT and Tech people at the time, society would legitimately have broken down.
ONS figures show more deaths related to Covid-19 in England and Wales than previously reported
Great.
Not read it yet but is that people who died who happened to have the virus present in their system not died as a direct result of it?
Deaths lag behind cases, they expect deaths to continue increasing for a while even after rate of reported cases slows down. But there will also be people dying without having cases confirmed so it might not track perfectly
These new figures include corona victims who did not die in hospitals, so I guess this data takes longer to come out than from hospitals.
