I probably need to look at more of what he’s done but you should be able to joke about almost anything, why not the trans community?

They’re not jokes. Purposely misgendering people isn’t a joke. Saying “Trans women aren’t women” isn’t a joke. Publicly shaming members of marginalised communities for who they are isn’t a joke.

edit - all my posts are quoting the wrong post of yours for some reason but you know what I’m replying to

I would agree that nothing is out of bounds when it comes to making a joke about it. But he in particular is way over that line.

I don’t expect everyone to care about trans issues or rights. I think most people either don’t care or don’t know. I’m not even particularly bothered (despite these responses).

I just think, why would someone wish to cause harm to someone less fortunate than themselves? And if they get told, repeatedly that that’s what they’re doing, what sort of person doesn’t stop. That’s who Lineham is.

Comedy is never really funny when it’s punching down rather than up. Also do you seriously think Linehan is attempting comedy here? That he has decided to die on this hill thinking it would be like Father Ted for a new generation. Jesus fucking Christ.

I’ll look a bit more into what he’s done before I comment on him any more. He’s a great writer though. The idea that the creator of Father Ted and Black Books is some sadistic bigot seems mad to me but I’ll read up before I comment any more.

I agree, I think you should be able to hold an opinion like him and Rowling do and not be cancelled or just called a terrible bigot but going out of your way to troll them as much as he has puts him into Michael Fabricant territory.

It is mad but he really eent from that to the utter state he’s in today. And no it wasn’t done for any laughs at any point.

I followed him on twitter because I thought oh writer of father Ted and partridge and big train nice guy… Oh fuck was I wrong.

What I think happened is a bit like that lawrence fox twat who said something stupid or got into a stupid argument about something and instead of dropping it and moving on with the rest of his Tuesday or whatever something inside him utterly snapped and now he he has no marriage or career. And all for…???

It’s one of the most bizarre meltdowns you will ever see. I still can’t understand it.

I think comedians often tread a fine line between what’s hilariously funny and what’s unacceptable. When you think, Should I really be laughing at this? Look at Ricky Gervais at the Golden Globes - they didn’t know whether to fall on the floor laughing or to boo him off the stage.

A typical Ricky Gervais joke: Stephen Hawking - thinking too hard turned him mental.

It’s fucking tragic and Father Ted is one of the best comedies ever, but it’s true. People harbour all sorts of views that maybe even they don’t realise they have until they’re confronted about them.

Comedians really seem to be struggling with the whole “cancel culture” thing at the moment. Almost every comedy act I see talks about it and pretty much all of them seem to have no understanding about it. They’re salty that the world is changing faster than they can keep up and they’re confusing “not being allowed to make jokes any more” with people finding their jokes unfunny and behind the times.

Linehan seems like a lot of current comedians who seem to easily confuse being able to make jokes about any subject with just straight up being able to say what they want and not have any consequences. He’s someone who perhaps had some uncomfortable views on trans people and when he was called out on it decided to double down again and again to the point he’s dressing up as an LGBT stereotype and making fake dating profiles to try and prove to himself that he’s right in some twisted way. If he’d just listened to the people he’s marginalising in the first place he might have learned something and none of this would’ve happened.

Fuck the whole notion that it’s the victims and their allies that are causing people like this’ behaviour. If you’re talking about a certain group of people as if they’re less than human and people are calling you a cunt for it, they’re not just as bad as you and they’re not pushing you further into problematic thinking. That’s your fault for being a cunt and they have every right to call you out on it.

Lawrence Fox is a perfect example. Dude got called out by a random member of the public on Question Time for saying something shitty and got so butthurt about it that he had to go and seek funding to form his own political party just to make himself feel like his opinion was right. Absolute piece

I agree with people calling him out and/or calling him a cunt if they feel that they need to. That’s appropriate and probably deserved. It’s just at what point do we say, “Ok. I’m offended. He’s banned. That’s hate speech”. I mean, if someone on social media says things I find irritating/offensive or whatever I just unfollow them.

Is that not what “cancelling” is?

People act like cancel culture is some formal process used to balance the power of celebrity.

It’s not. Its literally just a lot of people going “Well this guys a cunt, fuck him.” And unfollowing.

I think the difference is if everyone unfollows someone they have no audience but they can still participate. If someone is cancelled, they are banned, fired etc: they cannot participate and it harbours grievance, victimhood etc. There is a difference.

I unfollowed him after a few months because all he posted our was stuff about gender shit. I wasn’t particularly offended personally it was just boring.

And as boring as it was to read holy fuck what must it have been like inside his head? Shit posting 12 hours a day 7 days a week on one single subject. I never quite understood what hat he had in the ring about it either??

Sad really. But a complete cunt as well no doubt about it.

It’s not. It’s hounding companies with a lot of hashtags and @'ing. While trying to find people within said originations that share your ideologies and beliefs to help back you and make as much noise as you can till they have to listen.

Who’s done that to him though? And what affect has it had? I’m sure some people have called for companies to not work with him or something but if they chose not to, it’s probably because he’s generating a lot of negative attention for himself by publicly being a wanker, not because people are telling them to.

Regarding Twitter 1) it’s a private company, they have the right to get rid of anyone for any reason. Graham would still be free to go down to his local high street with a megaphone and spout his views out. Freedom of speech doesn’t stretch to the right to use social media platforms. And 2) Twitter doesn’t kick people off because people have called for it and they’ve bowed to the peer pressure, they kick people off for violating their TOS.

I was on about cancel culture in general. I’ve long said I hate that people think FB and Twitter are some how a right. When it’s just companies mining your personal info for cash.
