In the news thread

I think it’s hard for the news to get traction because it’s almost impossible to understand the conflict in the first place without spending years studying it. You just get an endless cycle of Israeli airstrikes and hamas rockets, but no real narrative around it.

Last time I remember it being big in British news was just after the Prince Andrew revelations, the cynic in me just figured they were only choosing to report on it then to distract from that.

Can anyone summarise it for me. My understanding is hazy it’s basically “We’ve been persecuted for years, we’re moving in, making a flag, declaring a state and claiming squatters’ rights and everyone can sling their hook?”

Not easily lol. A few years ago I tried to read up on it then gave up when I realised how pointless it all seems.

This thread has some attempts, the question was about the recent escalation though.

As Snurp said, it’s really really difficult to even begin to produce a tl;dr of the whole thing. But you’re right about the recent stoking of the situation. That was then compounded by ‘Jerusalem day’ (which occurred the other day) which is essentially a hijacked far-right nationalist event granting Zionists free reign to march through Arab neighbourhoods and taunt them (all whilst having a police escort). It should be noted that many more progressive Israelis even oppose this act too.

Under the court ruling, Israeli security forces stormed Al-Aqsa mosque - situated in Sheikh Jarrah neighbourhood- and attacked worshippers there. Al Aqsa is one of the most sacred places in the world for Muslims. This, as well as the residential evictions is what has provoked the current situation. I’ve probably omitted various things but I’d be here all night trying to include them.

Supplementary to the reddit link Snurp posted, this NYT article from a few days ago helps too.

It doesn’t help that its almost impossible to take any anti-Israel stance without either sounding anti-sentimetic or being labelled as such. We have some Jewish family by marriage, they are not particularly deep down Jewish (they married outside the race) but I would never bring up Israel in their presence - it’d potentially cause a life long grudge

Was sat out in the car with my daughter watching this lightning then got back in to read that this had happened just down the road. Horrible.

This Iron Dome in an amazing piece of engineering

Old video but just as relevant today:

Petition against the intro of voter ID:

This policy is a great way to disenfranchise whole swathes of the population.

He’s one of my local MPs and he has a long track record in this sort of thing. Gets a lot of flak from more right-wing politicians and commentators via MSM here as he tends to piss off a lot of the monied classes.

Hmm, can’t possibly think why he’d say that

Hahaha! Prick. They were a client of mine at my old job. Did a few ‘serviced office spaces’ and these ones got charged the most by far. I think they even had their own festival, which sounded a lot like a LinkedIn night out.

Jesus Christ.

But they do have free beer…

Isn’t there some big scandal about these chiefs?

All these places that rent expensive trendy office space will be fucked now that everybody’s happy with working from home and finally figured out how to share screen on Zoom.

My fault! Really don’t know how I managed that.

They have a few large, landmark offices here and I went to check them out as I was looking to rent a desk space a few years ago. The offices themselves were fine, but the desks were tiny, especially for the €550 pm they were charging. The “community liason officer”, as she called herself, was constantly yabbering about community this, community that, everybody loves each here in the community, it’s a great community, we put on events for our community, the community loves it here… The kitchen area had a ton of free muesli and assorted similar snacks and fresh fruit, an in-house barista and free beer on tap. Which is fucking pointless in an office workplace, but she couldn’t work that out when I queried it.

The icing on the cake was this - “Actually, next week, we’re putting on an event for our community. We’re having a live band and lots of treats and snacks for everybody, it’s at 9.30am on Monday morning…”

Dodged that bullet and went elsewhere for a lot less cost and bullshit.

As a parent I cannot wait to get back into the office. I rent my own space and am currently at home with a sick child right now.
