Lib Dems take it. Word of caution though, the pattern for the last few decades (not a rule though) is that the party in power struggle in by-elections. These results can be shrugged off as aberrations.

It’s nice to have good news for a change.
But in 2019 Labour had way more votes than LD. Why is it that in this by-election they’re the realistic opposition for this seat rather than Labour?
Actually nevermind I get it, this is the safest of safe Tory seats that didn’t even vote Labour when Tony Blair was knocking about.

Because if you’re a Conservative voter who was furious that your party had parachuted some chump in from Birmingham who didn’t know your area at all and used Shrewsbury locations in your promo material and didn’t actual do any campaigning and you want to vote for someone else, it’s going to be a lot easier to vote Lib Dem than the other side (I guess?)
I wouldn’t get too worried. Lifelong Labour voters lent their vote to the Tories to get their precious Brexit ‘done’. Well according to the Tories that’s all over now and I can’t see any other reason for them to keep voting for this utter shower. Labour are polling great for the first time in years.
