100k a year is the new poor to Tories and their voters says Jeremy Hunt…

Can’t he see it’s a weird thing say as someone in government?

100k isn’t much but minimum wage is just under 21k.

Oh well, he can keep digging if he likes.

100k is not a lot if you’re cutting about in a white Range Rover Sport, New Build in an expansion area and some Turkey Teeth

There are so many variables at play it is nonsense. Anyone living in Surrey here? In my head it’s near London and expensive. I honestly don’t know.

Depends on how that income is made I guess £100k sole earner would be around a grand worse off than two £50k earners due to the tax structure. More so if kids and child bennies are involved :man_shrugging:

Between us on the forum we could probably list off ‘essential’ items that would burn through £100k after tax as a sole earner - I reckon an average 4 bed detached and a white 24 plate Audi would easily see 60-70% of that gone?

Then utilities, food, insurance. If you have kids - 2 kids in Nursery was costing us well over £1k per month nearly a decade ago!

How much is a Dry Robe and a pair of crocs?

Fucking had that in my head whilst writing my tldr post :joy:

Up the road from me is one of these where they knocked a hotel down - 4 bed detached and you’re looking at £480k. Mental.

My nearest neighbour’s 4 bed detached house is up on the market currently for £1.3m. House prices have indeed gone a bit mental.

And that’s when £100k is simply not enough

Massive build in the grounds of an old (massive) hospital near me, most houses don’t have garages, cheapest is a 3 bed semi at £315,000, local infrastructure can’t cope with the traffic as it is so they’re going to jam in 1000 new houses and cause holy bloody havoc. Nowhere near train stations or a decent bus service and they have the cheek to market it as the “Environmental Option” because they install a car charger as standard

edit: I guess £315,000 doesn’t sound much in the grand scheme of things, but it’s at least 100 grand more on average for our local area and the houses are like shoeboxes

Similar - 500 houses proposed on a field not far from here. Not sure if it has the go head or not yet, but the local schools are over capacity and the local infrastructure….exact same issue. I expect they’ll start at the £200k region - it is cheap around here!

Don’t get me started on this. There are some more sympathetic house builders out there who do provide public space around house and adequate parking, but they generally charge way more for houses on these estates. Affordable housing is crammed in as much as possible.

Biodiversity net gain has been introduced this year. So theoretically more space should be left around housing for ecological habitat. But if this isn’t possible, developers will have to buy credits to offset the loss when building. So these costs will probably be passed on to the consumer, leading to even higher house prices.
