Yeah if you’re more than 2 people it’s the fucking bomb.
Opening up two doors at the same time, then standing there for longer than you need to, letting all the cold out, with one hand on your hip and the other stroking your beard while you figure out which waitrose microwave meal you want to nuke for 3 mins, feels good.
American style? Nah, briefly looked into them when thinking about our new kitchen but settled on a standard 60/40 fridge freezer built in. Gave a little more worktop space back. Going to stick the existing standalone 60/40 fridge freezer in the garage once the kitchen work is under way.
Exactly what we’ve just done. Garage fridge freezer is for booze, party food and bread, pretty much.
Anyone got apple trees? I’ve got two - a “cooker” and an “eater”. They’ve both gone absolutely mental with fruit but most of it seems to be either rotting or infested. I’ve been lobbing them all in the composter pretty much. Anyone got any tips for making sure I get the good ones off without falling off a ladder and killing myself, reducing the amount of shit ones, and what to do with them all?
Yeah we’ve got the same and a plum tree. Apples have been shit this year because of the lack of rain. You have to pick them as soon as theyre ready to stop em dropping. We dont spray em or anything. Sometimes you get a good crop and other times its terrible. We make a load of jam stew fruit for crumbles baby food.
My school has 4 apples trees in a courtyard in the middle of the buildings that have a shit ton on them right now, I’ve bought a juicer so I’m going to grab them all tomorrow morning before anyone gets in and hide them so I get lovely apple juice every morning
We bought an apple press. Freeze then defrost the apples to make them soft, then press the juice out. Made some cider and also did the kids some apple ice lollies.
No apple trees now, but in one of the houses I lived in as a kid we had a couple of apple trees and a pear tree. Not sure what happened to the produce though haha.
More shed DIY stuff - Over the last couple of days I decided to re-insulate the loft before winter, which has led to more of a mini project than anticipated as I’ll have to wire in some loft lighting so I can actually see what I’m doing, replace the light in the bathroom with spots (which needs wallpaper removing from the roof(!) first). I’m going for 270mm of insulation which means fitting a raised floor. After all that I flipping hope it saves a few quid!
Luckily Australia doesn’t seem to be getting hit as hard as Europe with energy bills, so thankfully it’s not too much of a concern, which I realise puts me in a very privileged position.
Plus I can just buy a new kettle if it’s ever a problem.
I think this is the thing, I don’t have many options, our current 450L fridge is always full to an annoying point between the kids and my wife’s desire to capture every bit of leftovers for future use. I need space to peruse and admire what I might eat.
We already have a freezer in the garage. With multiple kids, you can never have enough frozen things.
Insulating and boarding our loft is physically killing me. Had to extend the lighting circuit to wire in two LED battens first. Done most of the insulation where I’m not boarding for storage, probably about 60%. Boarded a few m2 yesterday on a raised floor (loft zone system, expensive but good). Thankfully it has made a difference already in both warmth and noise and hopefully should pay for itself in a year or two with the current energy prices.
I need to get on this ours is part boarded, but the insulation is crap. Need to lift it and put some good stuff in. I want to put some between the rafters as well.
