Wow. That’s the left, right goodnight of support act/headline act combos right there :fire::fire::fire:

Was last night of the tour and both bands got on stage to do cat scratch fever.

The Autechre of Metal (silly comparison in many ways of course)
They are hit and miss but they groove well, quite a few good ones to pick from.

Classic groove from their peak

A fairly recent gem

Slow groover from underated classic

And just because this has such a feel, whole first disc/tape etc. Listening in bed at 15 or whenever it was gave me goosebumps

Death are fucking fantastic. In many ways the proper originators of death metal. So many sick riffs too

Any of you listen to Gojira? They’re probably my number one currently

L7 live in Rio

Definitely more grunge but a bit metal, this gig looks crazy. Not sure if its in this edit but the crowd go apeshit and quite a few are fully naked, probably because of the heat.

I got a Earache records compliation on tape randomly a fair years back, which has the demo versions of S.R.T and Spanish Fly, both bangers even in demo form.

Been loving Godflesh’s Streetcleaner again recently, hoping they’ll do another tour in the UK soon as they’re a band that’s on my list to check out.

Saw a reformed Godflesh a few years ago because they were playing with Loop, but Justin Broadrick seems to be concentrating on JK Flesh these days, which sounds like a slightly amateurish take on Basic Channel / Kevin Martin. Better than Scorn though, the electronic thing that fellow-former Napalm Death member Mick Harris did.

There’s quite a few projects he’s involved with, isn’t there? I need to check out more JK Flesh, not yet given them a full listen. I did like what I listened to of Jesu recently.

The most recent Godflesh album wasn’t too bad, seemed to delve back into the more hip hop inspired drums on there. I did feel it was perhaps ‘quiet’, though.

Went to an ATP thing at Ally Pally years ago, the main stage lineup was Melvins, Sleep (who I think played ‘Dopesmoker’) then Slayer playing ‘Reign in Blood’ in full. My fingers were stuck in horns mode for weeks afterwards.

Edit: I nicked a couple of rad James Jarvis things off the wall in there too, I have them framed on my office wall now, thank you @jamjar

I have never quite got on with a lot of metal, specifically black metal - it’s the higher pitch, top of the throat vocals I just don’t enjoy.

Having said that, I’d put Sunbather by Deaf Heaven in my top 10. Metal purists would probably scoff that that, but it’s a fantastic record.

I’ve been listening to a lot of Russian Circles recently, particularly 2019s Blood Moon, which is probably metal adjacent

Mates after an amp with a network receiver so he can play tunes off phone also, anyone got one they’d recommend?

Not too expensive if possible…

a lot of modern ones do that as standard now. i have a blackstar ht-1metal (that i think is no longer made) from like 7 years ago that did it

will have a poke around but just try PMT or somewhere like that

i have this conversation a lot. the more “extreme” metal sub genres like death, speed, black etc. aren’t like conventional pop music where the vocals are front and centre and all the hooks come from the singer. for a lot of metal the vocals are an instrument that just adds to the overall sound. its often indecipheral and gutteral. i don’t listen to death metal for the vocals. most of my favourite songs are my favourites because of sick riffs mixed with sick drum parts

isn’t the whole point of extreme black/death metal is to replicate suffering and being in hell?

I take it this is the stuff where some dude is just growling down the mic? I think I’ve heard some of that.

I think that why I like something like sunbather - the vocals are often quite embedded into the mix so it becomes a lot more ambient.

I listen to a lot of punk and hardcore, in fact I was listening to Converges first album this morning, so I’m quite happy with a lot of more extreme vocal styles, it’s just black metal in particular often has a pitch that I just find uncomfortable to listen to. Which, as Judith said, is probably the point

I take issue with your use of the word ‘just’ here. They’re not ‘just’ growling, they are GROWLING. When done well, it’s far better than having someone ‘just’ singing. Like, how tramline is singing? Boooring

Yeah a lot of melodic death metal has growly verses and clean choruses. That genre basically spawned the US metalcore scene in the 2000s with bands like killswitch engage - much more commercially viable as it can almost be “poppy”. You can have hooks and get people into it easily (I don’t like this)

Nowadays metalcore seems to be every type of metal that doesn’t fit into the more extreme categories. Massively over saturated market with some utter trash
