Thats it! And the Oxtrumentals!
This bangs as an instrumental
7 pints of ale on the windowsill and when I get my fill I chilly chill
Ever since first hearing this at age 13, I’ve loved the way the Boys shout “SEVEN!” in unison for this line, like it’s the most important word they have to tell you about right at that second. Almost as important as when The King Adrock asks you to let him clear his throat, or later in his career when he informs you that he drives like a maniac on the streets but he don’t give a fuck ‘cos he’s got the beats.
Mentioning those Beastie lyrics has reminded me of something I’ve long wanted to write about, but I’m saving for my memoirs. But the short version is:
The ‘Licensed To Ill’ album has a couple of examples of the best use of the word “because” in 20th century music. I’m specifically talking about someone saying “because” as if they are answering the question “why?”, when nobody has in fact asked them, but they’re telling you anyway. The first word on the whole album, and therefore the first word that most of the world heard the Beasties say, is a huge “BECAUSE…” even though nobody asked them why, and that’s part of what makes it great.
Another great example is in Motorhead “Bomber”, Lemmy says “BECAUSE!” before each chorus. Nobody asked Lemmy why. But he’s telling you.
And then there’s The Beatles 'Dig a Pony", where they say “Beee-cause…” at the end of each chorus, then don’t follow it up. So nobody asked them why, but they’re saying ‘because’ anyway, and then they’re not even saying because what. Brilliant.
Can you tell I’m procrastinating at work? I would’ve thought it was pretty obvious
Agree. I am never drawn to lyrics that give you everything, story, reasoning etc and because is a big culprit. Why do you need to explain lyrics? leave it up to us to try and make sense of it.
Would anyone who’s been recommend going to watch DJ Yoda? Would it be full of dancing students or mature b-boys nodding over pints of bitter? Big hip-hop fan but not so keen on going out…
I’ve not seen him in years. Last time that pretty much was the crowd - just full of maturing hip hop heads, right up my street really. Yoda was banging though. I’d go.
Agreed - would go if I could. Do it!
Ok cheers guys - ticket booked
Back in my turntablist faze I was obsessed with Yoda and even did my own Yoda-esque mixtape complete with juggle routines, skits, etc. except I didn’t have any editing software so I had to do the whole thing live recorded to mini-disk. Took ages to get a good one down. Really wish I still had a copy.
Been watching this. Mad story I could do with more detail on!
Shit that tossers that ripped him off at the start, and Sony
I have never appreciated this album, great proto jungle
Tickets booked for Wilco, some dad rock for August.
Weird as the title sounds, this was fucking sick
At the end of last year i was going out quite a bit and noticed a shift in dnb sounds, i started digging a bit and found a few tunes in that style did a drum and bass mix
Give it a listen and a like on YT if you feel so inclined… thanks
In contrast, the theme from Grandstand
Speaking of acoustic niceness
