Shiny happy people by REM
Ahhh that’s the one
Candy - Iggy Pop ft Kate Pierson
Sorted
New BoC tune is pretty disappointing. Sounds like someone influenced by BoC (Tycho) and is working in the box. Lost all the bits I like about them and become too produced.
Ah well.
I’ll wait for the album, wasn’t a fan of Tomorrows Harvest on release but I have warmed to it since. I did prefer the Tape 05 track they put on YT more than this new tune. Does seem a bit “paint by numbers” BOC
I was same with TH too, everything felt safe and far too wishy washy. I appreciated the concept so they hit their own brief. I have warmed to it as well. I’m hoping there is more quirkiness to come on Inferno as this track seemed very pedestrian especially in the drum dept.
I’ve not looked at the BOC Reddit today but I imagine they’re losing their minds about this release and trying to pick it apart looking for hidden secrets. I’m not sure I have enough time to be bothered with all that
I really, really liked Tomorrows Harvest. Felt like an old John Carpenter piece.
The new song was grabbing me…but then what sounded like really cleanly produced drums showed up and totally took me by surprise. Not sure how I feel.
Yeah fuck that. It seems BoC wants to send a message to everyone saying denounce man made religion and cult ideologies and yet the fanbase are having a mass religious experience over a luke warm track.
That’s it isn’t it, the clean drums or the lack of the odd counter rhythms that add to standard drums to make it sound more messed up than it really is. BoC has always been pretty simple musically but it’s the timbre and sample manipulation that takes it further. It just isn’t present here.
I’d think it’s a cool enough track and if another artist, Jon Hopkins, Nathan Fake, Com Truise or any other BoC influenced artist put it out i’d be saying it’s good. I expect too much from BoC and that’s a problem in itself.
TH, as a concept is great and they nailed it. Took me a while to accept that after the initial disappointment when hearing Reach for the dead for the first time.
I’ll be the same with this album, i’m sure.
This is exactly what happened with Drukqs, I think.
I rushed out to buy it on the day of release…got back and was very let down. It was way too clean sounding compared to CTD or RDJ…and didn’t sound like the zone he’d moved into with Windowlicker.
Took me years to warm to that album and finally fall in love with it.
My older brain doesn’t seem to give me the bandwidth to do that with new music these days, or very rarely anyway.
I didn’t have that with Drukqs but I was kinda late on aphex and electronic music in general. BoC was something that existed on it’s own, I didn’t tag it with electronic music at the time. I really wasn’t into guitars in electronic stuff so when I heard come to daddy I thought it was cheesy, and it still is really but I disregarded aphex on that basis, kinda looked at it in the same vein as NIN or Infected Mushroom or whatever. I think it was Alberto Balsam that changed that after I had the same situ corrected with Autechre as I discounted them as dreary ambient before.
Electronic music was like coming home for me though as I was crazy into JMJ as a kid. I used to design my ideal bedroom and it was covered in synths.
Depends on the modern music, because we all know the music on the water surface is so poor that it’s depressing but getting in the weeds and muck underneath there are still amazing things happening. And some awful stuff disguised as cool. But I guess that’s always been the case.
My stroke affected the part of the brain that deals with that kind of thing, memory and attention span is seriously fucked. And a worse temper, perfect for me!
If you’re getting what you need from what you already love then that’s more important than finding and getting to learn new loves.
Yeah, I do check for new things but you find so much comfort in what you know when you get older, I do anyway. I don’t try and fight it any more. Literally can’t remember what I own any more. It’s like record shopping at home but everything is free lol
I listened to the track they released in the car, the drums are too clean, but what really jolted me was the spoken part. On their other albums, especially Geogaddi, the voices are distorted, parts reversed mid sentence, way deep in the mix, this though is right there, very basic effect used, nothing I would call BOC
I thought it was pretty terrible but I’ll give it another go
Dipping the toe into jungle can be problematic
