If anyone can, surely MD has the chops. It’s not trying to be a d&b tune and has quite a light touch I thought

New from John Haycock on Resonance from up here - @Londonskater you might like this, cosmic Kora ambience…
I bet they’re his drum loops too. I just found it too messy overall. But I’ll give it another go later
If anyone ever finds themselves in Kingston JA they must go to Rebel T on a Thursday. Best place
Maybe banger was too strong a word. But I liked how loose it was, it felt like he’d just tidied up the end result of a jam sesh.
That’s nice. Tab opened so I can listen in the morning to a bunch…Thanks!
I agree and that’s why I think I’ll have a similar reaction to TH. I think they have served their concept and grown as sound artists more than wanted to please the crowds with Geogaddi 2.0. Maybe they cringe at how amateurish and naive they sounded in the past but that’s what we loved, the rawness, the dryness, the janky quirk. Now they are better producers with much better gear and knowledge of gear they probably;y feel they are closer to where they aimed to be. This project concept is probably going to be accessible to get their message to as many people as possible. Basically saying the world is shit because our need for control.
The vocal in this track put me off and it felt cheesy. And not in a CMOAC way but it’s just like a track I started years ago for a live performance and it’s kinda got a similar message, not as a monologue but in concept. The pitch and the way I spoke is very similar and it’s bicrushed on a 12 bit sampler in the same way. I discounted that idea as it was too on the nose and felt cheesy and condescending. I guess this track rubbed me the same way.
Still looking forward to the album but I think my expectations are very realistic now ha.
I feel for them. Expectations are SO high.
They fully operate under “they are damned if they do, they are damned if they don’t” scenario.
There are thousands of BOC MHTRTC/Geogaddi imitators out there releasing somewhat boring records.
And there are thousands of musicians inspired by BOC MHTRTC/Geogaddi who have done amazing jobs at creating BOC MHTRTC/Geogaddi type records.
If BOC repeat MHTRTC/Geogaddi half the crowd will be bored. “Oh, same old BOC…Why aren’t they progressing?” but if they progress, half the crowd will say “WTF. This isn’t BOC. What the hell are they doing?”
I’m in the camp that wants them to progress. And if I don’t like it, then I still have MHTRTC/Geogaddi.
Totally Agree. I guess my problem with this track in particular is that it doesn’t sound unobtainable like they always have done. I’m up for progression and appreciate that this is what the artist wants to do so it’s not for me to say what they should do. This sounds obtainable by any artist because of the accessible sound choices. Everything before always sounded laboured, in a good way and this doesn’t. For me it just lacks one main ingredient that they always had that drew me to them.
There are many reasons why I think this is and I could waffle on for hours about it.
I feel the same way about skate media. There are so many parallels with AWS it’s crazy.
A chunk of punk funk I guess, slightly reminded me of ESG or something. Still don’t love it but will check out what else he puts out
Had a quick listen to BoC, kinda tame and boring. Not that they were ever edgy or anything but some of their earlier stuff had more of a mysterious woozy vibe
Not sure if it’s anyone’s pint of snakebite, but saw the excellent Tristwch y Fenywod for the second time the other day, but this time in the wonderfully atmospheric surroundings of St Giles’s Cathedral in Wrexham. If you’re into gloomy, doomy, goff folk stuff, it might be up your darkened alleyway.
Oh aye well up for that
What the actual fuck is this I love it
If you’re into this type of thing, I can fully recommend most stuff from Dead Can Dance.
Haha, will ruin you all with goffic deep cuts.
absolutely cannot ruin anything with quality music. Dead Can Dance are sick. i really like darkwave but generally prefer stuff like Lacrimosa that is more classical goth metal/darkwave if that makes any sense whatsoever
Whoa, not listened to Lacrimosa in an age! Cheers for the reminder! Big fan of anything in those genre realms, but i know what you mean about the older stuff sometimes having the edge! So much of it out there right now too, feels like every few weeks there’s either a brand new release, or something old gets dug up and shared with the world again.
Musical necromancy, I’m here for it.
Man I spend a lot of time in various musical communities on discord and reddit and absolutely do not have time to explore all the new stuff. Usually takes me a few months to absorb new releases.
Do love a bit of “musical necromancy” though. Some things age so well, some things not so much. A lot of nu metal has aged sooo badly and is unlistenable (I guess it comes down to those easy pop-style hooks that don’t survive a lot of listens). Whereas old death metal ages like fine wine. Bolt Thrower is just as good now as it always was (maybe even better
)
Never listened to BOC once in my life. Just passed me by
Vid I made for a label I’m working with (not my tune, by the late James Baker aka ReKab)
Drop a like or a nice comment if you feel inclined, cheers
