Music thread

Spent the last 12 years working a job where I had to pick music based on a few artists people liked, and can confirm that overall, Spotify is way off. YouTube wormholes are much more effective than Spotify, especially since labels can pay more to have their music pushed to Spotify playlists. A lot of the time you’d be listening to an artist who’s just about to announce a UK tour, or a reissue or whatever. It’s all just part of the promo machine.

I once wrote thousands of very boring words about Spotify’s suggestion algorithms so AMA.

I take that back, not heard this for donkeys.

Mate has made a Christmas album. If you’re into Phil Spector and Glasgow indie you might like it.

Winning track titles.

I never bothered with Spotify but I’ve started using it to listen to the Guardian’s Know the score guides to listening to classical music and it’s quite useful for that.

John Peel was the best algorithm.

I found him prettty scattergun tbh. Always worth a listen because there would be something good but there wouldn’t half be a lot of shite as well.

First heard Photek via his show.
He definitely played more music that I didn’t like than stuff I did.
Extremely diverse.

He just gave everyone air, no politics, if he liked anything about it, he’d play it. Can’t not respect that even if some of it was drivel to most folks.

I got into The Fall quite late. I always found getting into them daunting, but oh man it was so worth it when I checked out that Perverted By Language vid. Wings is incredible.

You could easily survive by only listening to The Fall. There’s an album for whatever mood you’re in.

I would recommend The Infotainment Scan, it seems. Or seven years ago I would have. And did.

Forgot about that.

Sonic Youth did a good Peel Session of Fall covers.

[edit] Not as good as I remembered it!

I was remembering it through rose-tinted headphones. I loved both bands so I think I was pretty excited by the idea at the time.
