Any good Spotify playlists for new music from a variety of genres? I like the 6 music weekly one as it’s nice and eclectic but I’ve rinsed it a bit.
I don’t like listening to music on the radio as the talking annoys me. Apart from Huey and Iggy.

Jesus, Huey Morgan must be the worst thing on any radio station ever. Washed-up indie singer with no clue about what he’s playing. Mercifully his producer (a man called Tom Whalley) can give him the occasional decent record but there’s still a 50% chance our man Hugh will say the name wrong. I get that he doesn’t know anything about the stuff he plays but he could at least listen to it before it plays…
So many of his links make me think of this:
He’s also got absolute shite patter on Twitter, and after he blocked me I started getting DMs from his producer/handler Tom Whalley so he’d obviously gone and grassed to the bigger boys the stupid Michael Fabricant.
Hahaha I knew you’d hate him!
I don’t know what it is but I just like hearing him on a weekend morning. He’s a total douchebag but I like his show.
I also quite like Fun Lovin Criminals (some of it) so that’s probably why.
The last thing I was able to ask him about was the Jamaican accent he uses to introduce reggae songs. It’s like a full on racist uncle, all “Yah mon! Reggae mon! Hahaha!” and baffling that the BBC allow it. I asked if he could do a Chinese accent, or an Indian one, and he said something about how David Rodigan (a man who has spent decades living in the West Indies and devoted his life to its culture, and never played in a novelty one-hit-wonder indie band) can do it so it’s fine.
“Hate” is quite a strong word.
Nice one.
“Dislike” then.
Some guys I know from notts have started doing this on spotify now…

Lots of blues sttuff that I know nothing about.
No, I hate him.
Related, Goldie was filling in for somebody over Christmas and played Glory Box by Portishead who he went on to describe as “the queens of the West Coast”. News to me but stoked that Geoff Barrow and Adrian Utley are living their best lives.
Then he introduced Unfinished Sympathy by Massive Attack as Unfinished Symphony which makes me wonder if he’s spent 30 years not realising that’s a pun and all the people around him were too polite to mention it, or if he just fucked it up here and didn’t rerecord it.
He’s really listenable though, sounds like a big kid when he’s presenting.
I find I’m the same - Following.
I don’t know what it is but Iggy is up there with the most annoying to me - rubs me up the wrong way immediately.
I only really listen to 6 Music as the alarm at 6am or when we’re camping and then it’s Marc Riley after sproggins has bedded down and sometimes seems to be Craig Charles earlier on. I always make a mental note to listen to Marc Riley’s show at other times but never seem to. Craig Charles seems to play some decent stuff even though it’s usually something I’ve already heard.
I think there are only four Craig Charles shows, and they just rotate. It’s always the same stuff. And if he’s that into soul, why does he play so many remixes? Who ever thought, “Well that Curtis Mayfield track is pretty good, but I think what it really needs is a 4/4 120BPM drum beat over the top!”
Tom Ravenscroft and Gideon Coe FTW.
“For no good reason sacking frontman of the Family Stone, a Scottish rock group (7)”
@buildafire you will know this. Way too obscure for a cryptic in a national newspaper.
I’m no good at cryptic clues at all. More one for @Les_Zeppelin I think. Guessing it’s something ‘____sly’ then?
I only do the NYT crossword.
It’s a word with -sly taken out (sacking). The answer is the name of a Scottish rock band that seems pretty obscure. Members went on to play with Uncle John & Whitelock and Bonnie Prince Billy.
Totally stumped at this. I know them and can’t think of previous bands with ‘sly’ of any of them. Trembling Bells / Alex Neison would be the obvious for BPB but it can’t be.
(The) Needles
You were nearly there! I had to Wikipedia them.
Jeez. UJ&W connection is tenuous, to say the least. Sounded like the person from this band was actually in UJ&W, rather than formed a new band with a former member.
I definitely remember a Paul Needles being around. Probably DJed somewhere.
Speaking of Scottish bands I’ve been rinsing the soundtrack to restless natives by Big Country, hits home.
Brilliant film, and one I was speaking to @jamjar about not long ago…
