That looks identical to Finnish, which is just as impenetrable. I speak decent German and a good standard of tourist French and Spanish, but despite being with my good lady for 25 years and completing the Duolingo Finnish course, my Finnish is still crap. TBF, it was full of absolute nonense like “The Swede is a viking and the Finn is a wizard”. Y’know, the really practical stuff.
I’ve got pretty quick at replacing inner tubes on my bike, like 15-20 mins or so. Last Thursday, I had to walk the bike & a load of training gear home 6km from football after picking up a puncture, and fixed it before going to work on Friday morning. Then I got another one yesterday, so I replaced that inner tube this morning pretty quickly and thought I was a great lad.
My tyres are running a bit threadbare and after finding a notable hole on the running surface, I picked up a new pair today. I had forgotten just how long it takes to put on a brand new, extra stiff, hyper rigid tyre and my hands are knackered and my thumbs blistered.
And then, of course, I realise just as I’m done after an hour of pushing, rolling, twisiting and prodding, that I’ve put the tyre on backwards… and it’s raining for the first time in 2 weeks here.
It’s called “Drops”. Similar-ish to Duolingo, very gameified. Estonian language apps are very few and far between as there are only 1.3 million speakers. And yeah it’s very very similar to Finnish. They can understand each other but can’t speak the other language, usually. Very often here the Fins just speak English to the Estonians.
Parking fine situation is absolutely mental. We’ve basically just let these 3rd party companies come in and privatise anything and everything that can be parked on. I imagine the landowners get a decent bit of cash so if the government aren’t bothered then nothing will be done.
There was a good article in Private Eye about it last year and apparently there is a review going on at government level but can’t imagine anything happening.
I seem to be unable to lose any weight. I eat less than 1600 calories a day, cycle 10 miles on an exercise bike 4-5 times a week, try to eat more protein/less carbs and aim for more natural ingredients than processed. Not a pound seems to shift, and I have plenty to spare
About ready to break my rule and call the doc about weight loss jabs
I was in this situation after the pandemic. For whatever reason cycling just doesn’t move anything for me. The only thing that gets me in shape is weights and high intensity cardio (like running fast). The weight dropped right off. People thought I was ill
How much do you weigh if you don’t mind me asking.
Also have you looked at those nutrition things? My sister had something on her arm and told her loads of mad shit about what was bad for her digestions et
I probably have no idea what I’m talking about but I feel like cycling is good for my leg muscles and my mental health but it doesn’t really seem to do that much to me when it comes to sweating, losing weight and all that compared to skating. Maybe try running or skating more? Or swimming?
Have you tried intermittent fasting? I try to not eat anything before lunch most days, then have a solid lunch, a few snacks during the afternoon and a solid dinner. Seems to work for me. I started doing that 3 or 4 years ago and I’d probably weigh a ton and a half more if I didn’t. Show me a pack of Jaffa cakes, it’ll be gone in 2 minutes even if I’m not hungry.
I was at my heaviest at the start of the pandemic, 333 pounds, which was horrific, always been a bit of a chubster but that was a different level, managed to lose 70 pounds, ate pretty much what I eat at the moment, cut out snacks and cycled most days, the weight fell off. The weight crept back on, probably complacency, I’m back up to 311.
I am starting to think that the cycling does little for me, I’ve cycled for about 20 years on and off and to be honest, i can go out, do 15 miles and barely break much of a sweat, got some dumbells in the garage and a sleeping dog, maybe some weights and upping the dog walking might be a better shout
IF was also on my list to try, sometimes I’m wondering if breakfast is purely habit
Runnings deffo off the cards, my right knee already sounds like a bag of spanners being flung down stairs. I am ashamed to say that my weight has put me off skating at the moment
Muscle burns more calories constantly just by your body maintaining it so maybe focus on weight training. That’s why your body sheds muscle when it’s not getting enough food, it’s expensive to maintain in terms of calories.
Also, muscle is where your body stores blood sugar, as glycogen. Once the muscles are full, any remaining blood sugar will turn to more fat. So, more muscle = more storage for sugar and less conversion of it to fat.
Had my bloods done about 6 months ago when I brought it up before, everything was normal. I take an SSRI and they talk about weight gain on it, but I was on the same one before with no issues.
Looks like the Intermittent Fasting and weights is going to get a try. Just went and weighed myself and that’s just depressing, so that’s getting the head knocked on it for a month as well
Key to losing weight is burning more calories than you ingest.
I’m in a similar boat to you where I cycle +50 miles a week, eat relatively healthy yet the weight does not budge. After a holiday with family I put a few extra kilos on and have decided I need to shift them and at best lose a few more.
For the last week I stopped the bad habit on scoffing chocolate after dinner.
Ideally running would help get a good sweat on and start burning the fat - but, like you my body is not in any state to start running. My doctor even advised me to actively avoid it. So, I’m going to try some aqua boxing and maybe look at using an elliptical trainer. Hopefully these two combined (with yoga) will get me sweating, strengthen my body where it needs strengthening and start to make a difference. Ideally, if I can strengthen my body enough, I can maybe get back into running again and reap further benefits.
Keep in mind, when people hit weights to lose the fat, 99% of the time they gain weight because the fat is replaced by muscle mass. So strangely you gain weight, but then it’s easier to starting losing it because the fat is gone. Not an expert but I’ve heard this a lot from people in the fitness world.
In any case, if you’re already cycling 10 miles a day that’s really good. Everyone is built different and there are loads of factors that affect our weight (I just realised stress might be a cause for my problems). Try and take it one step at a time sensibly and with discipline. No reason you can’t make it.
I’ve heard that as well, a lot of armchair experts (my brother in law mainly) who spraff on about the right way to do everything and that “If I do weights the pounds will just slide off” - keeping in mind he’s basically doing Slim-Fast so i’m not sure where his expertise lie
Going to try IF, in fact, i’m sitting with a black coffee in my Misfits mug trying to force myself to like it, never not taken milk and sugar if my brew. I’ll add some weights to my day and maybe cut the cycling down slightly aiming more for mental health with that than exercise.
I never tried these (I was always chronically skinny) but I know a few people who have. There’s a lot of stigma and Mumsnet judginess about it. And apparently quite a good south park about ozempic lol. There are a few options out there now, some have more effects on weight loss than others with different side effects. Depends on the person though. When they work, they are genuinely amazing.
Key with any health goal is making sustainable changes, some people smash crazy doses and starve themselves skinny then when they stop they just balloon straight back. Some people smash the gym for a year and see some gains and then quit without changing diet accordingly.
You don’t have to do just the jabs or the diets and exercise. You can do both, it’s not a race. By the time you hit your target goal, if you haven’t rushed you’ll be healthier AND already have healthy habits. They do work pretty fucking fast though!
Worth a chat with the doc at least, there’s side effects and health risks like any medicine, but there are health risks of being overweight too.
It also helps you quit drinking and smoking I’ve heard
Oh yeah also, if you’re counting calories but it’s not working, hate to say it but you may be counting wrong. I did the same thing (with the opposite goal) for AGES and only doing meal prep and measuring all the raw ingredients made me realise how little I was actually eating, even though it felt like way too much lol. Don’t need to do it forever
Cycling will definitely help you lose weight if you go hard enough. Like others have said, it’s about intensity - just plodding along will do little. Get yourself a basic garmin or wahoo unit (or strava app on phone) and record a regular ride where you try and maintain the fastest pace you can sustain, look at the average speed you achieved and try and improve on this. If you can’t run due to a dodgy knee, this is a good, low-impact exercise and a lot less depressing than starving yourself! If you do it regularly, say 3 times a week, it will work. I do a lot of this kind of riding and I really struggle to put weight on.
