Young people are way more stupid and antisocial than old people and it didn’t stop skateboarding from getting popular in the past. I think to save skateboarding you should get it kicked out of the Olympics, ban parents at skateparks, ostracize jocks and force people aged 30+ to skateboard in secret.
Totally get this but do you remember how you felt about the older generation when you were young? Slash grinds and vert? No thanks. I wanted the new shit and didn’t care at all that skateboarding came from surfing or whatever. The older guys never tried to educate me either. Think this is just something you have to let go
Old guy trying to take up space rants about old guys taking up space!
I feel like younger skaters don’t hang-out with other younger skaters as much as they did? In little groups instead of everyone hanging-out or mixing it up. Skating is as close to football as it’s ever been, I’m not saying it’s like football, just there is a skate park in every town and village now. It’s not viewed the same as it was anymore.
Skateboarding is just so visible and known now, I think some of that rebel, outsider mystery and allure has gone forever. Old guys might be a factor but it’s not the main one. Skating is just in a different place full stop.
Older generations are unavoidable now, and young people see skateboard history played out everywhere all the time. We’d only ever see an old mag now and again, but it feels like the entire history of skateboarding has been digitised and rereleased. I mean, just about every video ever is on YouTube, there are people on forums constantly talking about old stuff and even the clothes companies make now relate to various times in skateboarding’s past.
We got educated on Lavar and Jovante by the older dudes.
It doesnt feel like it has changed much in the past 25 years either. When i started in 98, stuff from 88 seemed totally alien.
Youngsters need to crack on with whatever they want to.
When the Dogtown documentary came out we all went to see it as 13 year olds and started doing Bert slides on the skatepark flatbank - but obvs I still preferred seeing Muska and Appleyard footage. I think appreciate of skate history just comes the deeper you get interested in skating. Hopefully it’s still the same now.
Lance was my favourite older skater when I was a kid becuase I read about him in Transworld, and sickeningly, I’ve just worked out I’m the same age as he was when he was doing the 411 intros in 2001 ![]()
Yer but its pretty grim these days.
Actually theres one kid in Oxford I have faith for.
Kids have always thought that they are being original as soon as they start making up their own shit. They find out soon enough that it’s all been done before and to be more humble. Even quicker nowadays when they get roasted alive online for posting every little twiddle they have renamed themselves. This would put most tender beings off but hoepfully the kids who really have the bug for it will take it on the chin and educate themselves. Education is key to keeping people grounded. But yeah, let them do what they want really, I feel so far removed from skating now anyway, even from peers my own age.
Kids have it different nowadays, even though we’re behind in the UK in infinite ways.
GF is in Skagen, Denmark right now and walked past this skatepark in a school.
It’s just so disposable now. Something is on insta for a second and it’s gone, oh look 10 new videos on YT again today. Free skate mags just sit in shops. It’s so hard to even keep up with most of it. I’d hate to piece together a recent history of the most important events and parts in skating.
Skateboarding is so fractured and throw away. The old guys are from a place where each mag and video was about waiting and looking at the mags from cover to cover until next months or rewatching videos again and again until the next one came out in three years by that company. There was space between everything to take time to enjoy it. Now everything is shoved in front of our eyes all at once, on constant rotation of newer content by the minute.
People find it hard to get to the end of a part these days, let alone a whole video. Hardly anything has rewatch value. Consume and move on, repeat.
@voodoo - quoting you but you’re fairly close to what I’m feeling…
This. Also don’t forget to click on his link to Tactics.com to help his channel out! ![]()
I said to my mate last week it now all seems to be ‘worthless shit’ that is forgotten about once the heart emoji is tapped and next reel/video begins, regardless of how good it is.
Anyhow, semi related to the topic in hand - I had a really good session last week where there was probably a 40 year gap between the youngest and oldest skater. The oldest probably ruined it by being old and being there - fuck off home and watch skating on the internet you old Michael Fabricant ![]()
Agreed but I was at least aware that skating was different before my time. If anything I came up just as one era changed and another began. I was riding a powell ry barbee with the tarot cards and my mate’s new board was a chico fruit seller.
On the school run this morning (whilst wearing a Blast tee): “Oh did you used to skate when you were younger?”
Chopping down a tree with an axe is novel for about 5 minutes then very quickly gets very boring and hard. One hour in and I’m only 6 inches into a foot wide tree. Wife too tight to get a chainsaw.
How thick is the tree? Photos of your progress in today’s photos please, haha.
Edit: missed the foot wide bit.
A bow saw could be a good thing to get if you can.
Tried that but the saw just sticks all the time. I’m sure it is all use error cos I haven’t done this before but choosing 22 degree sun wasn’t the best time to learn either. My watch keeps asking if I want to record a HIIT workout
Double not stoked: fly bite yesterday is infected this morning and my lower leg looks like an elephants trunk
Spent 5 hours gardening today and 3 and a half of those was pressure washing… As a reward for being so productive I’ve now got a severely achey and sunburnt back.
