és aren’t really looking to see to kids though. They’re all about the aging 30+ demographic who now have a bit of cash to spend on reissues and nostalgia.
He lives in Pennsylvania, I can see why he’d rather skate in skateparks every day than film in the streets for companies that don’t even make videos, plus it’s not like he’s a park rat like Jagger Eaton or some shit, you know he can kill it in the streets. All his street sections were banging, I mean he did a nollie heel back noseblunt on a handrail in one of them, enough said. Big fan of his YouTube stuff, can totally relate to skating average parks in cold weather. Wishing him good luck.
I rate him too, and I enjoy the videos. It’s not the right content for Es if they are trying to regain credibility, but I really hope he gets sponsors who support what he does.
Nor should they. Unless you’re adidas or Nike you’ve got no chance in making that a sustainable business model. Vans, DC and Etnies have had stages where they’ve managed to catch that wave, you could maybe even say that Adio and Supra caught it too. That’s led them to massive, short term successes but they ultimately either shrink back or, as with the case of Supra and Adio, collapse entirely. éS have found a viable niche and while it might also not last forever, it’s a safer bet.
As for Asta, I’m sure with his audience he won’t be short of footwear. Reckon his style of skating would suit NB# but can’t see it actually happening.
I’m a huge Wade fan but the best skater on eS is easily Aimu Yamazuki. He’s the guy they should be spending all their budget on. He’s got that special gift.
Well, he says Don Brown and Kelly Hart were always stoked on what he did then he got the boot without getting much info on why. It’s not like éS were that big really, you’d expect more from a shoe sponsor than driving on your own and staying at your team manager’s auntie for a filming trip, wouldn’t you? Pot calling the kettle black to me.
Yeah but it sounds like Es have been letting things slide for a while. I agree they’re to blame too if they ok’d it, but it sounds like they didn’t have any budget or any direction. Tom was doing the best he could in the circumstances, and I think it will work out better for him anyway because he’s built his own little thing now.
Yeah, who knows, he might make more off YouTube than he got from éS? How ridiculous… éS was the shit in the 90s but they’ve been rubbish since the relaunch, no direction as you said.
Seems like the Nidecker group are making some big decisions, maybe the savings of giving Joslin the boot will be worth it but it sounds like Asta would’ve accepted a cut in pay whilst still being owed money and having a solid YouTube following so I’m not sure that’s a good call.
“tuff” annoyed me
Yeah, ugh.
The whole thing annoyed me. Them talking about community and culture… My arse.
You don’t let go people like Joslin, Nassim or Tom Asta. Those guys are as pro as it gets, they get the job done, have a good attitude, do everything they’re supposed to do. They’re not as young and flavour of the month as Aimu but they definitely did not deserve to get fucked over like Tom Asta did. Fuck that.
Tuff is unforgivable. But I support ditching old guys who seem to stick around forever these days and putting a few actual teenagers on.
Joslin’s 28, Nassim 27. They’re in their prime! Can only think that Joslin was on a fair bit of money, and that maybe encouraged Nidecker not to renew his contract.
Ooo let’s see the email you sent!
The punctuation in their response is giving major ChatGPT vibes, but the “tuff” thing is odd.
It’s her second language.
Chill out, you lot.
@franc remind me…How many pairs of Joslins did you run over the past 6-7 years? What was the fit like on that etnies x Independent Nassim vest? Were you into it?
Those Tom Asta Santa Cruz shapes are banging, right?
Or did you not buy any product because those dudes really don’t appeal to you?
Just watched that Asta vid.
I get that he’s doing it for the YT following that he has, but does anyone else find it a bit weird? A succinct farewell on an insta post or interview or whatever is fine, but I feel like we don’t need to know the inner workings of what was going on with HIS contracts or whatever.
I could never imagine talking about essentially private conversations between myself and past employers to the World Wide Web. Maybe it’s just me?!
I find that interesting.
Most people in the comments seem to appreciate the transparency, personally I’d rather know what went on rather than hear endless speculation.
