Made me laugh in a sweaty airport so thank you for that.
Really though, his skating has taken such a nosedive compared to a lot of his old peers and if his tricks aren’t doing the talking for him like they used to all anyone has left is him being a cock.
When people remember Koston, they’ll remember the (crap) personality, more than the 20 year stint of being one of the most progressive street skaters of his time.
I don’t agree.
Koston is a certified legend of skateboarding for having progressed the sport massively in the streets but also killing in contests, on transition, at demos and in videos.
His circus tricks are just an obvious example that he can do just about anything on a board, and when you’ve done just about everything, why not have some fun?
People who only remember Koston for some of his silly antics have sadly missed out on some of the greatest skateboarding ever done.
The only blemish I see on his resume are his involvement with the berries (although the berries is one of the biggest media houses to exist in recent decades), and his sometimes arrogance which I feel comes naturally to anyone at the very top of the food chain unfortunately.
Ps I’m pretty sure his couple of tricks in the new Nike video are legit, especially for a pro in his very late 40s maybe early 50s.
It’s not like Kostons old parts were ever filled with goofy high jinks or even showed off his humour though (mouse skits aside). His parts were just high level skateboarding only, then he suddenly hit 38 and decided he was going to be a silly little guy all the time, pretending he can’t do switch flips during contest runs. That’s what’s been jarring for people.
You’re right though, the past couple of years there’s been enough good clips to show he still has it. It’s be great if he could be a bit more Reynolds in his approach, but it’s not like he’s got anything left to prove
I think one of koston’s ways of handling stress is to goof around. I have no problem with that. I do feel the silliness got amplified though via the need for berries content. If he had never followed through with that, people wouldn’t be so upset.
Koston has always had that goofy side to him. Eg. Messing around with nose manny lipsides at the end of Menikmati, the section in Chomp etc. You’re right he’s fallen back on that schtick as he’s aged, but he’s always had a petulant streak. Remember the Yeah Right? intro!
For my money, he’s one of the greatest street skaters ever. Edglrd is so irrelevant it doesn’t change that.
The Koston tricks in the new Nike video were what I wanted to see.
He’s not really put anything out since 2015 - Aged 40 - that wasn’t just goofing around. That was great to see as he’d not really done much in a good few years at that point, IIRC.
I was always a Koston fan, but it’s like he hit 35 and gave up trying and decided to be the wacky guy on the session which now looks a bit daft as there are a lotta people who are taking the post-35 year old levels and raising the bar so heavily.
He’s 49 now. So, almost a decade of riding on his name after that part and fuck all else, really. And even then, with his wholo 15 years of god awful social media presence, he has just taken away from that name he created for himself.
Kinda feel like he needs to just knuckle down, be a real ambassador and nice geezer and get on with putting proper content before he actually really is too old.
To be fair, Koston has had stuff in multipleNikeclips in the 10 years since his Chronicles part. Would be great if he put out another part, but that seems unlikely at this point.
And yeah, he posted some obnoxious replies in his comments, but his social media presence is pretty low key nowadays and he posts clips on his Instagram every month or so.
You could accuse nearly every pro over 40 of milking it. That is the sad reality of aging, you become less productive.
