Why would any skaters in general really care about LV though? Yeah they’re a huge brand but it’s exclusively for very well off people who would probably buy anything they make just for the label. That’s not exactly the sort of company I’m hyped on.
That said I actually quite like the shoe itself and I’ve always liked Lucien’s skating so I’d not go out of my way to hate on him but that doesn’t stop it all looking a bit silly, not that he’ll be losing much sleep.
Yeah all of that I guess. I’m not trying to get into a big debate or argue with Mick on the internet. I’m sure it’s a great shoe. It’s existence isn’t going to affect any element of what I like about skateboarding. I don’t know Lucian. Me saying this opinion on the internet will not affect him.
LV getting involved in skateboarding is absolutely no different to Toyota or Chic Fil A or McDonald’s or Got Milk. Skateboarding has always been looked to as a way to either make brands cool or to give them an edge. That’s the way it’s always been and that’s fine. I just think it’s silly that certain things get a pass and other things don’t.
Take Lucian out of the equation, there’s no way this shoe would get a pass on this forum.
Take Lucian out of the equation, there’s no way Thrasher would allow a Louis Vuitton advert in their magazine.
Why is it lame to skate for Flip and model for Burberry, but cool to skate for Palace and model for LV? Why is it lame to be sponsored by a beer company that has nothing to do with skating but cool to be sponsored by a French fashion house that has nothing to do with skating? We make fun of people who look up to people like Kylie Jenner but she has her name on a Louis Vuitton handbag the same way Lucian has his name on a LV shoe.
Why is it “lame that they’re getting involved in skateboarding”? Are independent shops going to go out of business because suddenly all the kids are buying LV?
In the '90s I wished Polo and Tommy would have got involved in skateboarding, so the stuff could have been easier to get, tweaked for skating and the people who wore it in the mags would get paid. If Lucien likes the stuff and they’ve bothered to engage with him, make a shoe and pay him then surely it’s a win for everybody. It’s not like this was rushed through, it’s been on the boil for ages.
If you want to be ‘core’ I happen to know that Straye have a half-price sale on right now because I keep getting their Instagram ads. Some company that makes shit overpriced (and now half-price) Chuck copies shouldn’t get an automatic pass just because it’s a skateboarder at the helm. If anything that’s more of a worry because it opens the doors for any former pro to sell any old shit to kids, based on their legacy.
A global luxury fashion brand wanting to work with skateboarders and make what they want is nothing to moan about.
The Slap thread about this is much better, to summarise that:
Lucien rips, well deserved, this is crazy, you don’t have to buy it.
i got a pair of the Vans AVE’s 3 months ago for about £45 from an SOS in their sale and they have skated really well, so much so that i just grabbed another pair from vans website 50% off sale plus extra 10%. no way are they worth £90 but they are very light, comfy, flexible and super grippy. obviously i dont do much in the way of tricks but it is quite satisfying to actually have a hole in my shoe from skating again. i have quite a pointy kickflip so shoe always goes here first for me, but it does seem there is a tougher layer of something else underneath the suede.
i did get a couple of other random holes in the mesh sides but overall would recomend these, last 2 pairs were Es swift and adidas city cup and these are much better than both of them in my opinion
Massive double standard but that just how it goes, look at football, one player moves to an opponent and fans applaud it, another guy does the same and they’re money grabbing scum.
If you’re generally popular you get away with these things.
Preference of skater is not the same as occasions when people get a pass or not, some people have been absolutely slated for going down the fashion/modelling route and some haven’t.
The worst thing in skating right now is the weird kids on instagram trying to invent flatground tricks with extra flips in and the slew of predatory sponsors picking them up and using them to make money.
Anyone who’s making money from skating and high fashion is winning in the best way possible imo.
Yes I considered Zered Bassett’s Red Bull hat and I thought it was awful. It didn’t ruin his skating for me though and if he was getting a lot of money for simply wearing a hat then he’s definitely winning.
