You’re right - I’m wrong. 900 in 1999, Theeve not founded till 2007. Hawk sponsored by Theeve in 2009. But he did some cool tricks on Theeves, including another 900 in his forties.
Yes - carbon’s been around a while, as you say. I had a couple of LibTech boards, with carbon and fibreglass layers. I also had some Revolution decks, which were all carbon, coated in thermoplastic. Then there’s Powell’s Flight Decks. I’m not sure I’ve seen the combination of carbon top and slick base before, though.
That’s the way in most sports, I think. You have purists and tech enthusiasts, and both have their merits.
A lot of people in tennis weren’t keen on the idea of composite rackets - the added power over wood turned matches from lots of rallies to 100mph serve-slugfests.
Not being funny but Hawk used to ride Trackers and everyone knows they are literally the worst trucks you can possibly get
So what I’m saying is just because Tony Hawk rode them does not mean they are any good
Did hawk ride Fury for a while? Burnquist rode Fury too and those things were fucking awful.
Muska and Rowley too if I remember right?
Imagine if Hawk had attempted the 900 on Ventures.
The audience would have been sprayed with shrapnel as they exploded on impact.
Fury trucks were good.
He did ride Furies - I remember that. I bought some years ago. Mainly I’ve gone between Indy’s and Theeves in recent years. They ride very similarly- I think Theeve geometry is based on Indy. I went wide for a while and had Grosso 169s. Then I went back to 149s, and the Theeve equivalent.
The base plate was good for easily putting your bolts in, but it was one heavy truck and the ball turning thing went funny after a while.
Sold quite a lot of Fury trucks and some of those guys buying them would buy Fury again when it came to time for a refresh.
Never tried them myself.
Similar story for Thunder bitd.
I wasn’t selling to ramp skaters that much, at least, there weren’t so many rampers about.
Back in the early 2000’s some guy in non stop convinced me to get some unit phantom trucks. I went in to get some independent but they were sold out. Being young and unable to walk out of a skate shop empty handed I purchased. One of the worst choices if my teenage years.
Ha.
And I’d know that guy.
Notts shop presumably, not Mansfield.
In Mansfield we didn’t really coerce anybody into anything, people would try and feel it out for themselves but we would answer questions about products as honestly as we could.
This was even down to advising parents that the difference between UK brand boards being 15 quid cheaper than US brands didn’t necessarily make them worse.
Obviously based on our stock.
Maybe it used to be the case that people would enter a skate shop knowing exactly what they were expecting.
Perhaps more so in a small town than a city.
Yeah in notts, I think it was Ant. I was going in to spend fifty quid and fifty quid I spent.
It was going to be him or Mark.
Tony did the 900 on Fury trucks. Fuck knows why I know that but it’s definitely right.
The set of Fury’s I had were good.
Worse trucks I ever had were Monster, JT, TrainWreak and Ellington were on for about a month I think.
Fury Super Sports were good.
Always wanted to try Fury, heard they were like Indys. Same with Film.
But then again, why not just ride Indys.
