And yeah filming/editing was exactly what you’d expect from Nike/ Jason Hernandez. Real shame,m as somebody said this had potential to be something far greater and more memorable.
But hey we’re all pretty jaded older men, hopefully for younger girls starting skating this is super inspiring and encourages them to start making their own street videos
I mean I’m all for diversity in skating but not really sure if this would make all that much difference? Hardly like there was a load of leery shots of girls or anything, was just a super safe corporate edit. If it was something with a bit more creative freedom then yeah could be interesting.
Its interesting to see how much her progression has plateaued in recent years when you look back at the footage of her wearing Osiris and riding foundation boards from when she was 14/15.
I reckon in 5-10 years girls skating will really have a progression push. At the moment obviously things are moving forward but still need strong crews to gain confidence and really properly push each other. Don’t get me wrong there is some of that now but feel it is still in the acceptance/ nicey-nicey back slapping stage.
Think about all girl crews with filmer/ editors on a proper Dan Magee quality control vibe. Saying when something is done a bit shit/ isn’t really that good/ they could do better.

Really agree with you here. I’m keen for that, but it’s definitely in the stage where any call out made would mean getting called a ‘jealous bitch’ or something. At the moment female skating at grass roots is exploding and it’s all very much about participation, positivity, support etc etc which is absolutely necessary… I’m really interested though in how we push the next level…I wanna see more females in the streets, filming parts and really going in. There seems to be such a lack of it - especially over here in Europe as less women are supported by bigger brands to support this type of thing. I know it’s a luxury to have financial support / filmer on hand but it happens on the regs with male counter parts.

Exactly, how would we know unless someone tries it? Maybe a female filmer would just copy what male skate-video makers have been doing for all these years, or maybe they would do something fresh. A female filmer, hanging out with an all female crew, is surely going to have a different dynamic to HD Hernandez. We might get less of those slightly dull filler shots and something more interesting. We have had some good female-led skate videos, but with a corporate budget something a bit more ambitious could happen. I dunno.
But this is a Nike SB video so you’re going to have to play it safe regardless of who edits it
In the second part of my post I said basically what you were saying, more female edited smaller skate owned companies and scene vids would be interesting where there is that creative freedom.
