Definitely. I hope now there’s a better understanding of just how talented she was in her own right. I’m always touched by just how deep and loving her and John’s relationship seemed when I see them on film.

The thing about the Beatles is, you just have to listen to their double A-side of ‘Penny Lane’ by Paul and ‘Strawberry Fields’ by John, to see John was a much darker, introspective person than Paul and musically to me anyway, more mature. He had outgrown The Beatles and wanted to try new exciting things, with new people. That’s why they split (to me), not because of Yoko.

I’m struck by just how dismissive both Paul and John are of George’s songs during the sessions.

There’s one bit towards the end where GH is trying to suggest something and seems to be talked over by PM and JL (sorry, I’m typing on the phone). Then he leaves. Pt 2 tonight maybe. I’d had a few beers last night so may have read it wrong. Not a huge Beatles fan but they’re alright.

Apologies for opening worm cans with that Yoko comment. She was wailing, they seemed to be jamming and I found it amusing. Didn’t sit there seething with hate or anything :grinning_face_with_smiling_eyes:

It’s been an open joke for years (I know this is Ringo and not George).

Yeah, a bit shitty.

Probably won’t watch it but I reckon George was the most talented one in that group. Then George Martin, then Yoko. Then whoever else.

Just like Wu-Tang, the solo albums give it all away.

I know, but to see it documented on film is another level, and then cut to Maxwell’s Silver Hammer.

And yeah, classic John Lennon:

“I used to be cruel to my woman, and physically - any woman. I used to be cruel to my woman. I was a hitter. I fought men, and I hit women. That is why I always go on about peace, you see. It is the most violent people who go for love and peace.”

The beauty of the Beatles is that they’re bigger than the sum of their parts.

(Anyway, Ringo is the best.)

Big fan of his voiceover work. Less so anything he did musically.

And it’s not just the competing with Lennon McCartney songwriting being tough thing, they’re outright twats about it

Thank fuck they never replaced him with Clapton.

Ringo is great. His drumming is really good on everything they did

The beatles just worked musically, no one can deny that. They all added their bits that made the songs what they were. They wouldn’t have been what they were without Ringo’s perfect song serving drums and George’s guitar sounds and licks. John and Paul were masters of melody and hooks and they had the thirst for experimenting and a producer that enabled it all. A really lucky position and unique to that time. Many other talented people could have done something asa succesful if they had the same ingredients at that time of musical progression.
Personally, Paul’s influence on the songs stand out the most, his approach to song writing just jumps right out and says “this is Paul McCartney”

I usually avoid this kind of video but I agree with this

Talking of ‘professional songwriting’, I got told the other day that one of the little rollerbladers that used to trundle around our spot back in the late nineties now writes songs for BTS and is very well off.

Was this ever skated to?

There’s a bit in the anthology where he’s practically baring his teeth at Paul. Definitely a lot of tension there even years later.
